Private flight from US to Cuba?

Gents, need some help again:

I know travel restrictions have been eased recently to/from Cuba and US.

Question is this: can I operate a private flight with a non-US plane and non-US pax and crew from the continental US to Cuba, and if yes, what are the restrictions?

Any help greatly appreciated.

To be honest, you probably could. However, considering the time involved and the major paperwork required, I'd highly recommend going from the US to Mexico or Grand Cayman or Jamaica or some other island in the Caribbean first, then on to Cuba. If you going to return to the US, go back the same way.

Howerver, as you are operating a non-US registered aicraft, do check with US Customs first, becasue the rules may be a lot different for you.

It is really hard to receive permission for a US registered aircraft to go from the US to Cuba. I did receive permission, only to have the trip cancel and it took over a month to receive permission.

Con-pilot is spot on. Go to Grand Cayman or Jamaica before and after Cuba.

Thank you kindly, gentlemen.... I've launched a request for info into this with US Customs, and will post back if I get a tangible result. In the meantime, a short landing at one of places you suggested sounds like a good plan.

If it's any help I recently had to travel the opposite direction from Havana to Miami. The Dominican Republic air taxi operator we used offered to stop in Nassau enroute. In the end we went to Montego Bay and caught an AA scheduled flight into the States but it was a waste of time when we could have gone semi direct.

The Cancun option looks pretty good I guess. The question now is wether I have to do a "real" stop in CUN with parking and customs, or if they will let met land and taxi back to depart immediately, or better even fly a missed approach and pick up the clearance to Havana..

Time to talk to the trusty handlers in CUN methinks..

Outbound they don't have jurisdiction once you leave US territory. It's between you, the intermediate & Cuba and satisfying any of the requirements between the intermediate & Cuba.

I'd be surprised if US C&I didn't want to see C&I stamps from your intermediate stop on the return. Don't forget eAPIS submission leaving & entering the US!

Oh, thanks for that, but we don't plan to re-enter the US from Cuba, this is a round-the-world-in-8-days kind of business trip. The only open question is how expeditiously I can leave CUN again to pick up my flight plan to Havana..

FlyMD,

If you're coming to havana from the northeast us, i would not use cancun. It is not an option for direct entry unless you have a govt permit, your entrance will have to be via Cozumel, you can easily spend more than a good hour doing just transit, big handler fees if done via uvavemex, and customs/imm/military will treat you as a suspicious aircraft until cleared. Plus you will need a special mexico insurance to land or overflight mexican airspace.

If you can, and it is on your route, go Nassau, less than an hour for transit and fuel and comfortable facilities.

Kingston handlers are quick now, they will handle all the paperwork hassle that one had to do before. Good and quick.

If you tell me your point of departure on u.s. I can reccomend other alternatives.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Supermoix, we'll be coming from Idaho Falls or Colorado Springs, that's why I was thinking Cancun....

Special Mexico insurance? remember I'm not a US registered aircraft and we fly worldwide, so unless Mexico makes it to the "war risk" countries, we're covered.

We regularly use Cancun as an airport of entry coming from Europe or Africa, what's the difference if you come from US?

Hello FlyMD, i just called a friend in the FBO in Cancun.

The additional insurance policy is s Mexican Civil Aviation Requirement, the handlers, by phone, say that a worldwide coverage will suffice, but all the time DGAC ask for that particular Mexican policy, check with your insurer, it is not expensive.

Regarding the entry via Cozumel I was wrong, this is only required for aircraft coming from the Caribbean, Central and South America. Coming from the US it can be a direct flight into CUN. That makes Cancun your ideal departure point to Cuba if you need to avoid departing the USA.

As a private flight, you will need to send in advance a statement regarding the status of flight (private/charter) in company letterhead where the operator certifies that tha flight is a private one, with detailed info on the pax (name, dob, passp, and nationality) they are cracking down on charters.

Write to this e-mails: [email protected] or [email protected]

They will help you through any details you need, very good operation in CUN.

In my experience of flying in and out of Mexico, which is considerable, you must have separate Mexican insurance. This is mandatory no matter country of registration. As the post in the quote above states, it is not expensive and any international handler can get the insurance for you very quickly.
