In my experience (it's not legal on the ground) it works fine. No way they can blanket the satellite footprint.

What he said ^^.

Just don't take it with you out of the aircraft. You'll go to goal in India for that.

I hate to be the contrary voice here, but I have a different opinion.

Satellite providers of all types (voice, data, and TV) have agreements with countries around the world to block the use of received signals both in flight and on the ground. The providers agree to this for political reasons. If they did not agree, the host country could possibly confiscate equipment when you landed. They are able to do this technically since the receivers need GPS input to provide positioning data for the dish.

Yes, there are ways around this blocking, but I ain't saying any more.

I know all this because I've been blocked, and got me unblocked as well.

Thank you all for the responses, I was told that, in China if you already have it, you can use it in flight across their airspace - it works, India was somewhat similar.
However one must respect the 'regulations' of another state.

Cheers

The Law regarding Sat Phones

custom circular for Illegal use of Satellite Phones in India - Forum - Law, Lawyers, Advocates, Law Firms,Legal Help, Legal Experts,Judgements,Law Help, Indian Lawyers

Above should explain the use of SAT phones in India.

1) They will work and are not blanked out
2) You can import them for use in India only with Prior Permission of DOT
3) Good luck getting the above without 3000 papers to fill and 20 windows to go to.
4) Cell phone coverage is widespread including 3G and can be quite cheap there
5) A photocopy of your passport and a credit card is all that is needed at the Airport to get the above connection.

In the unlikely event of not getting a connection, use your roaming. More expensive but at least you wont go to Jail for that.
