Jeppesen Flight Planning & Support

Hi Guys,

I've e-mailed Jeppesen but I'm still waiting for their reply.

Can anyone share some light on their services for Biz jet operators.

Could anyone give me some cost examples of a short international flight either in Europe or USA. Just interested in ball park figures on what they charge for all of their flight planning, overflight and FBO assistance.

Any basic figures would be much appreciated.

Rick.

ITP

Cost tends to depend on:
  • Who you are
  • What you Fly
  • Where you go
  • Over what countries you fly
  • How often you fly

Single requests can be pricey for a 5 hour multi continent flight whereas a EU area 1 hour is much cheaper. See About Us. Jep is good but can be expensive to the ad hoc user. You can get cheaper if you use a ad hoc supplier!

Suggest you await their reply as 'how long is a piece of string'?

Why not call up and ask them? They won't bite.

Your question is like asking "How much does an airplane cost".

If you call up and ask them to file a flight plan from say Shannon to Rome, it will cost around $300 just to run the plan and file. Everything else is extra. Plan on the actual cost plus 15%. Arranging is one price, if they pay for it on their account, they add cost +.

They will want you to fill out a credit app before they do anything.

Here are some of the extra things they arrange:

· Itinerary & Route Planning · Overflight and Landing Permits · Airport Slots · Ground Handling · Customs Arrangements · Discount Fueling · Hotel Arrangements · Catering · Ground Transportation · Computerized Flight Plans and Filing · Weather Services · Flight Following · Aircraft Security · State Department Briefs · Visa Assistance · Air to Ground Communications · Aircraft Charters · Jeppesen Trip Kits · Airport Familiarization Charts · En Route Charge Reports · Air Crew I.D. Cards ·

I have used Jeppesen Int'l for many years, Only once or twice per year though. They use to be great...recently I am not as impressed.

I have noticed they are slow to respond and need a lot of prodding to get things moving. My experience at least.

I am giving Colt a try for next trip to LIRQ/LIRA. Never used them before but we will see.

I called Jeppesen the other day for a trip kit quote. After 40 minutes of voicemail, I hung up and emailed them. I'm still waiting for the quote 4 days later. Terrible way to run a business.

Out of interest, why use a US company for a flight to Italy ?? You'll still be paying too much IMHO.

Any discussion of flight planning services is a sure fire way to get me (and most pilots who use them) all fired up. It's rare that you find one that is consistently prompt and accurate. Most are better in one region or another.

In my experience, most are flat out incompetent or just lazy. For a time, we were forced to use one that routinely would file for an overflight permit on the leg out, but not the return. At most airports, the ground handeler works for all the planning companies (and is usually the brother in law of the airport manager).

Be careful if you are doing a charter, it can take six months or a year to get all your bills! Make sure to find out all the estimated charges and bill them up front.

These days, I'd vote for Air Routing (They were just sold to Rockwell, so we'll see how long it takes for them to go downhill) or AirInc.

Italy trip starts and ends in US. We use an agency for logistic support getting out of and back into US as well as all arrangements while in Italy..or wherever.

? They moved from Los Gatos to Denver about 8 years ago.

Oddly, that's when they started going down hill.

They are still in San Jose.

They also have planning offices in the UK, DXB and India.

I have called and ordered three trip kits this year, with in excess of a weeks notice on each, and not one arrived before departure. One only had to go from Denver to Aspen, the other from Frankfurt to Luton!!

If they moved to Denver 8 years ago, what Jeppesen ITP operations center did I visit is SJC last year? They've been in SJC since Jepp bought Lockheed Dataplan in Los Gatos.

The customer service at Jepp UK is absolutely atrocious.

I understand Germany is better.

Out of interest, what kind of stuff does their typical bizjet customer actually get from them? AIUI the main thing - within Europe - used to be working out the validated Eurocontrol routings, but that bit is now easy with FlightPlanPro.

Of course Jepp is the main resource for all Nav Charts, but for years they have supported biz jet trips like the other agencies by arranging overseas handling, permits, overflights, billing, etc. Not cheap but usually the reliable way to go.

Of course the prudent guy will add his adult supervision along the way so not to get tripped up.

By the way, ordered a Jepp trip kit 48 hours ago for N. Atlantic and Western Europe.. I haven't had a problem with getting the kits in a timely manner but nearly always have a problem with accuracy of my order...I have learned to get them 1 week earlier than needed so there's still time to get the missing bits sent out..

I know that outside Europe one often needs overflight permits, but I know of at least four overflight agents and that is just in the UK, so this seems to be a well sorted business.

Do people use Jepp primarily as a one-stop service?

ISTM that within Europe there isn't much to do because (at this level of ops) you deal with handling agents anyway and a phone call to one of those will sort things for you, and presumably that is all that Jepp are going to be doing anyway.

Jepp Int'l Handling is like most others in the business. They contract with local airport handlers and coordinate everything. Having a service always on standby and briefed on all of your plans, pax info, special needs, makes it easier to get things changed at the last minute or while enroute. Can communicate many many ways including via AIRINC which is handy for inflight messages. Also a 24 hour service so time zone adjustments do not complicate things.

Jepp, Base Ops, Universal, Colt, and a few others all compete for the same customers.

Of course there's the DIY route and this works too but can have its limitations.
