Pax attacks pilot, commits suicide

German magazine DER SPIEGEL reports the following pretty scary story. Details are very scatchy, but...

Sprung aus 500 Metern: Mann stürzt sich aus Sportflugzeug in den Tod - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten - Panorama

My rough translation:
----------------------
Jump from 500 metres altitude

A 26 year old man attacked the pilot of a light aircraft witha knife in Bavaria - obviously he intended to crash the aircraft. But the pilot defended himself, and finally the attacker jumped out of the machine.

Bergkirchen - Dramatic scenes took place abord a sport aircraft during a flight over the Bavarian village of Bergkirchen : According to a police report the passenger, aged 26, intended to crash the aircraft. He attacked the pilot with a knife, injuring him on the chin.

But the pilot successfully defended himself, so the attacker jumped from the aircraft and got killed.

The man had chartered the aircraft and the pilot, aged 42, on Saturday afternood for a scenic flight over Munich. In his flat the police found a farewell note.
----------------------

I see another wave of "security at small airfields and glider sites" coming...

Was für'n Ar...loch, einen Unschuldigen mit in den Tod reißen zu wollen!

Amazing how these idiots lose control of their lives and then think they have the right to destroy others along with themselves!

On an aside, how the hell did he push the door open against the slipstream?? Go on, go fly a pisscat, pop open the door (easy), then try to budge it open even an inch further (nigh impossible!).

The same happened one or two years ago on a pleasure flight over the North Sea.

I'm not defending him, but plenty of people lose control of their lives through no fault of their own. If you lose your job, and have no savings or family to fall back on, you can quickly end up in a trap of homelessness and unemployment which can be very hard to get out of. Suicide rates are very high at the moment, due to the recession.

Doodlebug, I find your post in pretty poor taste.

The very fact that a person considers/attempts suicide surely demonstrates they are incapable of thinking logically and sadly means that they believe things have gotten SO bad their best option is to die.

I hope you never 'lose control of your life' as if everyone thought like you there would be no one to help you overcome your trouble(s).

Show some humility.

''...and then think they have the right to destroy others along with themselves!''

Don't take things out of context, south coast. I do not knock how people can come to be in dire straits. It happens quickly, I have had tough times myself. What I do not accept is somebody wanting to kill someone else, which I had made quite clear. I stand by my comment.

The point I was trying to make is that I think when someone hits rock bottom and feels suicide is their only/best option, then I think they have gone beyond the point of thinking logically and therefore beyond the point of being able to understand the consequences of their actions on to others.

I think one has to distinguish the difference between a suicide bomber who wants to take people with them and someone who commits suicide and unknowingly takes someone with them.

You could be right, I dont know, and I guess we will never know this chap's state of mind.
