Plane With 8 on Board Crashes off Dillingham

The aircraft, which was reported overdue, bears the tail number N455A, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. That aircraft is a 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter registered to General Communications Inc., according to FAA records. The FAA did not immediately provide other information about how it knows that this is the aircraft.

Sadly...

Stevens killed in crash near Dillingham - KTUU.com | Alaska's news and information source |

Apparently, he was in a separate plane crash in 1978 and his wife perished in that one.

The death of the longest serving US senator (from before Alaska was a state!) and the potential survival of the EADS CEO (former NASA boss) and his son justify keeping this thread on Rumours & News.

It's certainly news in both the European and American press

Mods?

It would be a double miracle.....

Aug 10 (Reuters) - The chief executive of European aerospace giant EADS' (EAD.PA) North American unit, Sean O'Keefe, survived a plane crash in southwestern Alaska, a source briefed on the matter said on Tuesday.

O'Keefe and his son survived the crash, which killed former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska and several others when the plane went down near Bristol Bay on Monday night, the source said, declining further identification.

vanHorck, Not disagreeing, but there is still an active link to this thread on R&N.

this should really be in news...

also

because of slow speeds of otter, better survivability upon impact (vs a faster plane of course)

Up-date on Otter accident

Sad to report that the pilot of the DHC-3 has been confirmed as the former Base Chief Pilot at Alaska Airlines who retired several years ago. He grew up flying in Alaska, probably had over 25,000 hours of flight time and owned many aircraft from cubs to flying boats. Tragically, his son in law passed away last week in the C-17 accident at Elmendorf AFB. Truly a horrible week for this family and all aviation in Alaska.

From the Anchorage Daily News

I won't speculate on the cause but . . .

John Bouker, owner of Bristol Bay Air Service in Dillingham, said he found the wreckage Monday night. "I was in the air last night about 7:30 p.m., flying an air-taxi trip," Bouker said in a telephone interview. "Dillingham flight service station told me that GCI was concerned about the location of their Otter. They hadn't seen or heard from their Otter since 2 o'clock in the afternoon. So I got the information where they were going from and where they were going to and I backtracked their flight path."

Bouker he saw the wreckage just below the cloud line.
"The fog kind of cleared and I found the airplane in the side of the mountain," he said. He didn't know the mountain name, or even if it had one, but it was in the Muklung Hills, about a third of way to way to their destination.

The Otter had plowed into the hill, Bouker said. "He bounced up the mountain. He looked like he was in a full power climb. ... He looked like he was climbing when he hit."

Because it happened in Alaska, even though a senior EADS executive was on board, along with a very well known former US senator, it's not worthy of Rumours and News.

Stevens was one of two survivors in a 1978 Lear 25C crash at Anchorage that killed 5 people on board, including his wife. Aircraft landing in gusting crosswinds, pilot lost control of the Lear, stalled, and cartwheeled on the runway.

The Lear N77RS used to be owned by Aristotle Onassis as SX-CBM.

Statement from Alaska Airlines regarding the pilot of N455A;

'Terry Smith had many close friends and colleagues at Alaska Airlines who will miss him dearly, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Terry's family and loved ones. Captain Terry Smith retired from Alaska Airlines in 2007 after a 28-year career during which he served as chief pilot of our Anchorage base. Smith also flew as captain on two historic flights across the Bering Sea in the late 1980s that laid the groundwork for Alaska Airlines to offer the first U.S.-scheduled service to the Russian Far East in 1991. The Boeing 737-200 used on those flights bears Smith's name and is now on exhibit at the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage.'

As an aside to the rescue --

Guard chopper crashes in glacier rescue try: Alaska News | adn.com

Guard chopper crashes in glacier rescue try

On Monday, the Guard had been circling an HC-130 and an HH-60 helicopter overhead awaiting a break in the weather that would allow a rescue attempt. That equipment was redeployed to the Dillingham area Monday night after an airplane crashed there killing five, including former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, Hayes said today. It wasn't clear when the Guard equipment returned.

The group of plane-crash survivors was not properly equipped for an extended glacier-top stay. Four pararescuemen from the Alaska Air National Guard began skiing four miles up the glacier Sunday night and arrived about 21 hours later with food, water, clothing and shelter to last up to three days.

They are remaining with the five airplane passengers until they can be rescued, Hayes said.

A survivor of the crash that killed five people including former Sen. Ted Stevens told investigators he didn't hear any strange engine noises before the floatplane struck a mountain north of Dillingham.

He didn't feel the plane tilt backward or forward either.
"They were flying along, and then they just stopped flying" said Deborah Hersman, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, recalling investigators' first interviews Friday with two of the four survivors.
