Does anyone know if it will run the AFPEx website and allow flight planning to be done on it. I think it requires Java but have no idea if that runs on macs.

Cheers

Jepp UK has dreadful, terrible, disgusting customer service.

I have been trying, for 2 months, to buy an update CD for something.

It seems that emails sent to them end up on a PC with a stupid useless person in front of it, and he/she (not wishing to identify this person any closer) doesn't bother to read half of them. And when this person has got them (because you chased it up by phone) still nothing happens. I suspect an attitude / staff morale issue... a lot of emails have no name on the bottom which always suggests major internal issues, with staff wishing to avoid comebacks on c0ckups.

It is a poorly organised arrogant company which survives only due to its monopoly.

They do have some good people there, higher up. If you call Mark Bravery (one name I have) then things might happen...

AFAIK, no. The only way to run AFPEx on the Ipad is via a remote desktop product e.g. Citrix.

You will be better off with EuroFPL which is a straight website and does much more including SMS notification, and SMS activated FP delays (very slick) etc.

The only thing which AFPEx does is filing FPs for say Mongolia and some obscure stuff.

I agree with IO540- in my experience, and having seen the experiences of others, the customer service is nothing short of absolutely diabolical. A complete joke considering how much they charge for the service. This is what being a monopoly does for companies.....

iPad won't run AFPEx because Apple won't allow third party compilers, i.e. java, on their device (although Macs will run it fine). I haven't used EuroFPL so it doesn't look like it can do complicated AFPEx stuff... on the one hand, if you're in the cockpit with it you're not going to be doing much beyond dly / canx refile, but on the other, what if you're outside the IFPZ?

I appreciate Apple's "white box" idea with the iOS but I wish they'd let people with more demanding requirements fiddle with it a bit more!

It appears that Cessna are recreating their CP Calc and W&B software with in an Ipad App. To be available before the end of the year.

That said I wouldn't want to rely on version 1 of anything Cessna put together.

Should be handy once mature, Ipad might be on the shopping list Im getting tempted

I tried some of their software on a PC recently - it was so 1980s that I dug out some Duran Duran to accompany it.

Booglebox - you wrote "I haven't used EuroFPL so it doesn't look like it can do complicated AFPEx stuff".

Please let me know what more complicated stuff you would like to do, and we can support it!

All FPL messages, IFPS zone + Iceland / Greenland / Canada filing are supported with EuroFPL, as well as SMS/smartphone DLA/CNL/ARR messages.

USA/Carrib/Brazil filing is coming on-line this month. I'll be beta testing in November middle east/SE Asia filing for hopefully a December service provisioning with the goal of world wide coverage in 2012.

There is a free text AFTN messaging application in EuroFPL, but we have not opened it up to general public at this time.

But in general, anything is possible with EuroFPL, currently the source for about 1000 flight plans a week into the worlds ATC system.

Beyond AFPEX features, EuroFPL also provides CFMU route proposal, 180,000 valid routes in a stored route catalog, graphical radar based flight tracking in Europe, automated flight status notifications by email/SMS, approach plates and AIP pages for all of Europe, navigation logs with worldwide winds aloft, one-click weather briefing and NOTAMS, and very-low-bandwidth operations for expensive roaming GPRS data services and slow internet connections.

Give it a try! And contact [email protected] or myself with any questions. I've been pushing the service forward with both hands since summer of 2008 and I think the whole package of services is unmatched by any provider at any price, and it is still free.... (and available to pilots outside the UK unlike AFPEX)

Apologies Travis, didn't mean to bad-mouth your site. That is a pretty impressive feature list, thanks for the info. Free-text AFTN is something I use a lot so that would be good. I will give it a try.

EuroFPL has a super feature which is that you can delay or cancel a flight plan using a SMS message.

I got a rude awakening a short while ago when I phoned AFPEx asking them to do this (no way to run their Java app where I was, due to no internet etc) on a flight plan filed via AFPEx, and got a very rude response on the phone telling me to get the airport to do it. I filed a CHIRP report on this afterwards because it could really screw somebody up, in the "right" situation...

The standard original option, homebriefing.com, is now very poor due to their new bloated website.

EuroFPL is the best online flight plan filing site out there.

I am keeping AFPEx capability going just in case but have never had to use it due to EuroFPL not working. AFPEx remains a hassle, with its seemingly randomly timed 3.5MB application download which can bite you, on a slow GPRS connection, when you least expect it. And the vast majority of mobile internet is GPRS, not 3G or WIFI. The only way to avoid this application download is by leaving the app running and using Hibernation on the laptop; this seems to work most of the time.

Experience

Hi,

wanted to bring this up again.
Does anybody has an official approval for that now?
Is it reliable?
Is there a chance to have the text pages as well?

By the way with goodreader it is perfect for company documentation as well (OM, SOP, and all that other stuff u carry around).

Anybody experience with EUOPS APP? Reliable?

Thanks

There is something in the pipeline coming soon, but I am battling to find the exact details.

Can't wait, because I have recently been told in my company, that anything by Apple is for kids and entertainment only.

Come on FAA - lets drop the paper! Especially for Part 91.

2 x iPads with current subs, each with battery power as well as connected to the ships power >> Always up to date.

Legal??

Get real >>

You cant beat it.

Cant wait to make them naysayers cry....

Yeah

Sure it's a toy.
And for sure it's not a computer, but... for this and for paperless cockpit it is perfect.

I am always having one with me. Also with Jepp.
It does give you a very good situational awareness (boss calls u in hotel and wants to go to some freaky places).

It's Handy and very easy to use.

For me, there is no point in not using it.

Unfortunately I couldn't find out how you would also get the Text Pages.
That would be very useful as well.

Additionally, as it is soo handy, you might make your guys look more often into the books. I have never been lacy at that but since I got them on the "toy" I use them more regular an especially on long range flights after a coffee

Cheers

Jepp TC - size?

Trying to find out the size of the App with world-wide coverage, it says 5.7mb for the App in iTunes store but is that the full answer, if so great it will fit readily on a 16G version iPad.
Any thoughts

worldwide coverage is 500mb.... Looking forward to the enroute and terminal charts on this app. I cant imagine why anyone who is running an efb would have anything but an Ipad on their plane (once they are certified of course). My company has just gotten transport canada approval.

Charts etc

Presumably the addition of Charts and En-route will double that, so still a manageable size

Sorry if this has been asked already, but can you get GPS position in flight on your approach plates with the iPad II? Our department is considering them.

Thanks
