Question about per diems

Question about per diems
Howdy y'all,
Being totally new to freelance work I have a question about per diems.
Lets imagine a totally hypothetical situation.
A pilot is offered a time limited contract (4months for example). The company offers a fixed monthly salary and accomodation as the base for this contract is far away from the pilots home. In addition, the company offers per diems at the rate of xxx £/$/whatever PER DAY!!??
Now to the question. In this situation, does it mean xxx amount every day for 4 months or only for the workdays exceeding 8 hrs away from base or some rule like that??

Had one with the following, flying days only $30, overnight USA $100 rest of the world $120 hotel paid by company. And another $160 all flying days we pay hotel. There is no general rule just what it is.
