Challenger 605 / Legacy 600

Hi Everyone,

I've been going through the operating data of those 2 aircraft and noticed that the CL605, burns less fuel per trip (although the legacy burns less / hour), is faster, greater range, same capacity (12 seats) and has lower DOC's/hour.

The question I have is why the CL605 is more rare to find than the legacy 600 which is flooding the market. Is it only a question of resale value or is the legacy more reliable and cheaper to operate?

Thanks for the answers.
FC

You can't really compare CL605 against Legacy ? Legacy 600 carries around 16 pax CL 605 normally 10. Maybe you are thinking of the CL850 which is much more like the legacy 600. There are many 605's for sale around $27 milllion and you can get new 850 for around $23 million

Actually I'm talking about CL605's and the legacy in a 12 seat configuration. THat is why I am very curious. I know the 850 is a more expensive to purchase and to operate but the 605 really makes a difference.

The Legacy is for those not wanting a decent interior, have you ever looked in one? For inside quality a Challenger wins every time.........

Actually I did see several of them, the interior looked decent. But my focus is not really on that part.

Operators generally focus on operating costs and dispatch reliability and on the paper the 605 wins by far. For instance, here's the data I managed to get. Some very reliable sources I believe:

605 Legacy
Capacity: 9-19
Range @ MCS: 8pax 3603nm@ .80
Payload with Max fuel: 1533Ib
Typical fuel burn: 340gal/hr
DOC: $2406

Legacy 600
Capacity: 12-14
Range @ MCS: 8pax 3138nm @ .765
Payload with Max fuel:: 1438Ib
Typical fuel burn: 326gal/hour
DOC: $2470

The only downside I can think of for the 605 is baggage capacity which really is ridiculous compared to the Legacy. 115ft3 Vs 286 ft3, but of course, the Legacy was first built as an airliner.
May be current pilots from both machines can check in and give their opinion.

It's not a slightly greater range.

For instance:

At M.74, 8pax: 3912nm for, the 605
At M.718, 8pax 3262nm for the Legacy

605

What you definitely get on the 605 is a virtual bigger cabin because of its width and height.

It doesn´t feel like a tube.

With the range you are right you can achieve this range you mentioned on long range cruise. With Mach .80 and moderate wind conditions you are able to make about 3100 nm (real values not from the brochure).

hope this helps in decision making

Actually, the range of the Legacy 600 is closer to 3,100 NM, to be realistic. The Challenger wins hands down, if this is a factor.

The Challenger doesn't like to climb high initially when heavy, which gets you stuck in the middle of the track system when going over the pond - and everyone else behind is faster than you.

I find the quality of the Embraer interior not so bad - I've seen poor quality in both Bombardier and Dassault airplanes.

The Legacy cockpit is noisy, yes. Some of the features (= not being able to switch from feet to meters, for example) are just ridiculous, a real V-NAV is non-existent, the automatic anti-ice feature is strange (to say the least) and so forth. In many cases they went for the cheap solution and this is why they're unbeatable, pricewise. The almost never break down, easy and predictably to handle.

You can get a used one for 14 Mill. $, a 2008-model (0 hours, except the ferry flight to Europe) for 19 Mill. and so forth. They flooded the market in recent years and now there is a surplus of them for sale or rent by owners who ran out of cash.

Good Luck with your decision!

In terms of number of aircraft around, you have to compare the legacy with the 604 as well. The legacy was in production for some years before Bombardier updated the Challenger.
