Is it always so unfair to work for "bussiness" mans?

I am a bit frustrated from my job as Chief Pilot for one person owned charter company that is why I need some inputs.First, let me state I never wanted to be airline pilot,HOWEVER>>>>>>:I am about to change my mind..
My only boss-owner thinks he knows every bit of this job, neglects any duty times etc, creates his own rules, change them as per the case and in general the whole picture is total instability which makes people nervous and quite unsure about the whole picture....advice me if you can

your position

As chierf pilot, it is up to you to draw the line in the sand, knowing what you will put up with or where you will say No. Personally, at this stage I would be sending out resumes whilst I prepared to change things or leave in the process. If you are that un-happy, it is time for a change. Whats the guy going to do, fire you, you want to leave anyway, so are you going to leave on your all fours or standing up.

Judging by your thread, you can probably answer your own questions.

I'll second that. The choice is yours. Either stand your ground and have your boss play by the rules, stay and take it or leave.

There are far better people out there to work for.

The chances that you can change your boss are most likely very small.

Most people did not reach their position because they are easygoing and nice people. (there are a lot different guys, but..)

The only card one can play is their safety. If he is not interested in that, what else is there? Try to get another position. Been there, done that.

In my current postion I´m lucky enough to have build it from scratch with a request to build it as safe as possible in writing. I did put any reg I saw as important in an ops manual and had the big ones sign it. If they would ever ask me to do something out of that frame, I´d have the backup of their very own signature. (have not been pushed yet, but...)
Doesn´t help now, I know....

well, you are may be right to say that I am the person who can stop the process-and did it,however what to explain on those pilots who are concerned about their paychecks a bit more than safety?!?!...kind of tricky tricky game

"More concerned about pay check then safety"!!?!?!?!? Its time to leave anyway then!! I would not wanna fly with people who had this kind of attitude, thats for sure! What are these people? Single cavemen without family or friends?

Never stops surprising me....

I see possibly two areas that you can address with your concerns.

First, you are a charter operation, correct? If so you are under government regulations regarding crew duty time, rules and other government regulations. Because of this approach your boss, politely and respectively, explain to him that by ignoring these government regulations he is placing the company in legal jeopardy that could result in serious repercussion.

Secondly, is insurance. If your company is operating and breaking government regulations and rules, as well as operating outside the Aircraft Flight Manual and if an accident or incident occurs that results in damage or injury to any persons or property, he as the owner will be personally responsible for any such injury or damage. Because the insurance will refuse to cover any of the above as you are operating in an unsafe and illegal manner. All insurance policies have such a disclaimer included in the written policy, show this to him and again, politely and respectively, and bring this to his attention.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi all,

Sounds like a bad situation to be in and the recipe for an accident! With your experience you should not find it hard to get a job with another operator as a Captain. A lot of operators in the UK are desperate for Captains and I am sure you will be able to negotiate a good deal with someone.

Personally I am thinking of not renewing my TR this year and go back to flying twins as a safety pilot for a while. I found it more enjoyable and with a few circuits can log the time. Plus I would be home every night, which is a huge bonus. I would still be visiting set destinations but for me the important thing is to be at home at the end of the day.

People think that business jets are more exciting but I have only been flying between a couple of different airports and I never know if I will be home that night or if I end up in a completely different place which has happened on a number of occasions.

Airlines to me seem a better choice. Give me a job on a turboprop flying to a few destinations, roster and more than 300hrs per year and I would be happy!

Regards,
SF

"government rules???" in this part of the world this is kind of "I told you....!" but ONLY when it is TOO late.....well I am going against my..or at least my last desire to be a charter man....and leaning towards some airline-FO position would be perfect-the same money 120 times less problems 12000 times less responsibility.....thank you fellas!

Airplane owners

There is a one type of business man who could not accept to let another person to manage his situations !

Thus usually happens also in other fields of their businnes , all over the world.

They consider the mangement of an airplane like a "private yacht" managment and you, as a simply skipper of this yacht, are not allowed to decide about any management.

They consider work only the flight time and all the time spent in the airports is considered leisure !

They consider rest and vacations all the day you spent when on-call.

It is a well known story !!!!

I had some problems with my prevoius boss-owner, than i decided to leave and move to airlines world.

After 1 year I discovered that he did "exactly" what I was requesting to him (2 crews each airplane). One month ago he called me again offering more authonomy (and more money).

Try to give him the feeling that the situation is always under his control .
If you have any specific problem about mangement or JAA requirements do not hesitate to call me.

good luck !
