Alternate distance requirement ?

If operating under jar ops 1 many companies have a minimum distance of 50 nm for the alternate to be away from theoriginal destination.

Tried to look it up in jar ops to see if this was a hard requirement......can not find it.....

Anybody with ideas?

Thanks in advance, H

It's not there, just an individual operator requirement. Cannot understand why one would make that a requirement. I would let the weather and airport dictate the alternate.

I believe it is just an operator requirement, the obvious reason being that if the weather is bad in Paris LBG for instance, its not likely to be much better in Paris CDG etc.

No other reason I could think of, as it would of course be favourable for the pax to go near to destination.

The only other consideration is that the alternate fuel is the minimum required by Jar ops (type specific) or sufficient to reach an alternate if further away.
