Flight planning for a Mac

Is there Flight planning software that I can instal on my Mac that would be suitable for European (recognises and knows "one-way airways" etc !) and worldwide bizjet ops?
I used to use Flitestar but (apparently) it is not available for the Mac these days.

Thanks,

Camb.

If you install Virtual PC on your mac and a Windows progam within it, you run any Windows software.

If Flitestar is not still available in a Mac native version then what Mac version was the last one issued and where can it be obtained? Alternatively, does anyone else provide current Mac flight planning software?

PPS is horrible...I've used it at two companies now and find it cumbersome and unstable compared to Jeppesen products.

I have used Virtual PC on a MAC and tried running PPS in the virtual pc environment but always had problems getting it to print. PPS runs in a DOS environment in Windows so that may be the reason it had trouble printing on my Mac!

Jeppesen now do a fantastic product called Jetplan.com which is internet based. You don't have any front-end software on your computer you just use your web browser. I've accessed it on Linux, Windows and Mac systems no problem...you may even be able to run FPLs on your PDA if you have web access on it!

As of version 5.1 of JetPlan.com, you can connect through a PDA with internet access, albeit with limited functions.

I have received confirmation from Navdata Tech Support at Jeppesen that Flitestar was never available in a Mac version. Air Support does not have anything for a Mac. Does anyone know of any other flight planning applications that were ever available in a Mac version? Even an out-of date Mac version would be preferable to none at all.

Web-based applications are useless here. The Internet is too unreliable. It can be out of action for the region or the whole country for hours or occasionally a couple of days at a time. When it does work it is extremely slow. There is no high-speed connection here. Dial-up is far slower than my old 14.4 modem back in the First World. It often stalls and disconnects. Large files and attachments are unobtainable and equally impossible to send. The only people here with good Internet connections are a few large corporations, diplomats and some wealthy missionaries. These have their own satellite earth stations for Internet connections. The rest of us have to get by using the slow dial-up connections or else take our emails to and from an Internet cafe on a floppy disk. No good mentioning CDs – we have to go with floppies because that is the technology level that is available here in Internet cafes. The connection at Internet cafes is usually faster than my old modem but still no more than a good 56 connection and often considerably slower. Of course there is no connection at all at the Internet cafe when the Internet is down. We therefore need flight planning software that sits on our computers so that it can be used when we need to use it.

Another concern that those who have ever lived in countries subject to sanctions will appreciate is the ever-spreading threat of sanctions. We cannot depend on a foreign web-based application that might be suddenly cut off because some First World politician has a snit about our dictator. Of course, it might be our dictator shutting down our whole Internet system or external access to it because he is angry with evil outside influences from countries that do not contribute enough foreign aid towards his offshore bank accounts. Again, we have to have something that is on our computers and will be available whatever the political and economic situation.

Even without the intervention of politicians there are still problems with access being suddenly cut off. An example of this is Pprune email. All users of Pprune email should know that Pprune email does not operate on a worldwide basis. Late last year Pprune email’s sending capability was suddenly cut off in large parts of Africa and presumably in other parts of the Third World. If you travel here and use the email facility at an international hotel frequented by aircrew, let alone an Internet cafe, you will find that you are unable to send emails through Pprune email. It is far worse for a Pprune email customer who is permanently transferred to one of these blacked-out areas. Take a look at the thread “problem with pprune email” in the Computers & Internet Forum. In spite of the above Pprune is still falsely advertising its free email service as being “Globally Accessible”, “Permanent” and “provides you with all the facilities you get elsewhere”! Elsewhere, such as Hotmail and Yahoo, email customers have the facility of being able to send emails from wherever they might be. The cutting off without notice of Pprune email sending capability in large parts of Africa and presumably elsewhere confirms that any web based application or service is unreliable as at any time it can be instantly cut off by a mouse click.

Yes but other than that carrier? Only 15,000 other providers of free e-mail addresses and mail services. Vote with your feet, err, keyboard. If the service is crap where you work kick it into touch. Your problems remain the only one's that have ever been voiced to us. Does that mean others haven't been affected - impossible to say but certainly no one else has felt strongly enough to fire off a missive.

Meanwhile back at the ranch I can reliably report Jepp products such as Jeppview and Flitedeck are running very nicely on a Powerbook via Virtual PC at work. Significantly faster than our Wintel Fujitsu tablets as well which was a genuine suprise.

Regards
rob

PS If chest beating is de rigeur today for god's sake when will Boeing get their BLT to follow normal windowing convention and minimise on tablets so you can use the aforesaid Jepp software?

this is probably too basic for your requirements but at least someone is trying!

Now if the guys that developed X plane (on macs) would delve into the real world and produce a reliable flight planning programme.......

This is also interesting - used Apple powerbooks:

Cambioso,
I have been following up on your post regarding Flitestar as I am also looking for suitable Mac software to cover all of my requirements, including flight planning. I received an email dated 1 August 2005 from Tier 2 Navigation & Display Support, Jeppesen Sanderson Inc, Englewood, CO. This advises that according to three different sources at Jeppesen Sanderson Flitestar was never available in a Mac version.
In your post you mention that you used to use Flitestar. The wording of your post implies that it was a Mac version. Was this a Mac version that you used? If so, what version of Flitestar for Mac was it, when was it issued and do you still have a copy? I would like to know for sure whether or not Flitestar was ever available in a Mac version. In view of your post I cannot help thinking that I might not be receiving the correct information from Jeppesen.

Rob,
Thanks for the comment on running Jeppesen products through Virtual PC. An earlier email from Jeppesen advised that some customers have success running FliteStar off Virtual PC but Jeppesen does not support the product when run on that application. I also noticed the post by Evening Star on 13 June 2005 in the thread “Apple iBook” in which he states: “Only hassle is when I have to use Virtual PC and it reminds me why I am so glad I made the switch.” I too have had so much trouble with Windows XP on our two year old Toshiba that I intend to move back to Mac and want if possible to have nothing further to do with Windoze and its never-ending problems, even virtual problems! However, it’s wise to never say “Never!” so I will keep Virtual PC in mind as an absolute last resort.

Thanks,
Carrier

....I wish those planners ran on a Mac. I have a FliteStar version that's ten-plus years old that does, but FlightStar dropped the Mac product.........

The above comes from a Beech-user forum I found when searching for the press release about Jeppesen's acquisition of Mentorsoft's flight planning software.

I know for a fact though that there were versions for both Mac and Windows and I wouldn't be surprised if Flitestar wasn't conceived with Mac in mind. I know who to ask, but Tier 2 is not correct in stating there was never a Mac version. In fact I even have the original Jepp item numbers. In their defence however, I doubt if anyone in Tier 2 has been at Jepp for longer than 3 to 4 years.

Flitestar runs well using VPC (virtual PC), and you can subscribe to the updates just like any PC user. On one 2002 forum I found it was quoted as 'slow'. The only drawback is that Jeppesen's tech support will not troubleshoot any problems you might incur. You'd probably have to look for help on an aviation forum.

Hope this will help you in your choice of fp software.

brgds

Apologies if I was unclear - there is no Mac version available and has not been for some 9 years. It was discontinued soon after the acquisition.

Sorry to dissapoint..

Thanks for your post on 30 August. I apologise for taking so long to follow up.

You mentioned that someone has a ten-plus years old version of FliteStar for Macintosh. I would like to know the Beech-user forum where you saw this. I will also be grateful if you would let me know the original Jepp item numbers for the Macintosh version of FliteStar. I realise there is no recent version available. I would be quite happy to obtain a copy of the last Macintosh version released, even if it is nine or ten years old. I hoped I would be able to obtain a copy of the last Macintosh release from Jeppesen and would have gladly paid something for it.

I have tried Tier 2 at Jeppesen but they are deliberately being unhelpful. Even though a Macintosh version of FliteStar was sold to the public for some years and they admit some of their current staff were there at the time they have refused to acknowledge it, let alone advise the last version released and the date of its release. They obviously retain a copy somewhere, even if only for legal liability reasons. I fail to see what Jeppesen hopes to gain by being so unco-operative. Even if they do not want to sell me a copy what do they hope to gain by denying the existence of the product and refusing to let an inquirer know the number and date of the last release of the product? Since they were selling it to the public it can hardly be described as top-secret company information! How is this sort of behaviour going to improve the reputation and standing of Jeppesen and increase its sales? If Jeppesen in one area is unco-operative and obstructive and obviously lacking in public relations and customer service skills then it seems reasonable to assume that similar attitudes and standards exist in other parts of their business. Anyone considering purchasing Jeppesen products or services would be wise to check first if similar products or services are available from another supplier with better standards and attitudes.

How was FliteStar for Macintosh packaged for sale? Was it supplied on floppy disks or CD-ROMS? How many of each were included in the box? Was a printed manual included?

I will be grateful if you would post the requested information here or send me a PM.

Thanks, Carrier

Carrier,

My turn to apologise. I tried a couple of hours to find the Beech User Forum but without success. No idea how I reached it in Summer, sorry I did not retain the link. Meanwhile all part numbers have been removed from records, probably in preparation for a new or improved website. What I recall were a few part numbers for various frequencies of update service for various geographical coverages. No help there either now. I also don't have access to period copies of a catalog either.

I guess it wouldn't help in any event, because no-one is going to be able to sell you a mac copy, even if it were laying around somewhere (which I am certain it is not!).

(a) you cannot enter a discontinued item into the system, (b) the state of time-expired data would be prohibitive, and (c) it's not worth anyone's job to even attempt it.

That product has been discontinued for almost 10 years, so you can imagine there is little interest or enthusiasm in even discussing it. Ten years is a very long time in a company like Jeppesen where there has been a virtual explosion in different softwares being developed and requiring support that are strapping everyone's efforts. There's bound to be a certain reticence at spending time on a long-discontinued product when the products currently available are so demanding on people's time.

Mac FliteStar was definitely floppies, the IBM PC version comprised both 3.5 and 5.25, not sure there was ever a mac version produced on CD. I somehow doubt it. NavData was already offered so I guess there would have been some means of keeping the number of floppies to a minimum. The original user manuals would have been of Mentor origin which, when revised with the new company's name, no longer included mac. Packaging was produced showing both versions for a short while and the decision to discontinue mac was probably made within a year of the acquisition.

So there you go. This may not have helped you in your quest, but there's probably not much more to relate that would be of any use.

Season's Greetings!

Thanks for the reference to the iplane suite. I took a look but was unable to find any information other than that they intend to produce a Macintosh flight planning application. It looks as if it will be a long time before they have anything available.

Thanks for your post on 30 August and no need to apologise. You have been most helpful and I appreciate the time you have put in on this.

I received a letter from a helpful person at Jeppesen advising that the last release of FliteStar for Macintosh (VFR, IFR and Corporate - all coverage areas) was Version 8.0 which was released in July of 1999. If anyone has a complete copy of the worldwide coverage version of this including the manual (I believe this will be the corporate version) that they are no longer using I would be interested in buying it. As it would be almost seven years old I would not expect to pay anything like the original price but I would certainly be willing to pay something to cover the cost of post and packing and a few beers. If you are interested please send me a PM and let me know what you would want for it.

You may be wondering why I have been so persistent with this. The answer is in the thread “Enron-style problems in computer industry!” on the Computer/Internet Issues Forum. I hoped it might be possible to buy an old copy of FliteStar for Macintosh from Jeppesen but understand that there are none available. That is fair enough. The next best option is to buy a copy of FliteStar for Mac from someone who no longer uses it. While doing so it obviously makes sense to try and obtain the latest Corporate Worldwide version, which we now know is 8.0.

I hope someone will have a disused copy that they will be willing to pass on to me.

Thanks, Carrier

UVflightplanner.com

Tool designed (purely web based) for worldwide CFP's and wx specialising in Europe because plans are run RAD compliant with Eurocontrol. I believe compatible with Mac. Excellent product for ease of use, speed, accuracy and self help throughout.
