Any F-84 Experts Here?
 

Was wondering if we have any F-84 experts on the forum who might know anything about F-84Fs used in Project Gun-Val? Particularly interested in what armament they evaluated and which/how many airframes were used?

I'm terribly sorry but to my understanding the Gun Val project was solely about Sabres. There are multitude of documents stating the Gun Val was about testing more efficient machine guns on F-86 Sabre to increase the kill rate against MiG 15's.

This study does not mention Gun Val in relation to F-84 nor P-84, but different machine guns were tested on separate test beds eg XP-84A. But those were NOT tested in a real battle, merely tested by the manufacturer to gain better C of G and stability.

So what I get out of this is that with the F84 there was no project name for machine gun testing in real life, but with F86 there was a Gun Val (gun evaluation) project which included real life testing against MiG 15's. What a job for a test pilot, huh.

I may be wrong of course, but this is what I have understood from the files.

Just thought I'd nudge this old one: anyone out there know anything about F-84s used in Gun-Val? My assumption is that it would be F-84F rather than the Thunderjet. Conjecture of course.
