I might have ambled down to Goodwood for the return but if it is the 6th I'll be boozing in Putney...

Amazing, what these guys are doing.

treadigraph 26th Nov 2019 07:15

Just departed Athens...

edit: ...to Pescara and now en route to Padova apparently...

Jhieminga 27th Nov 2019 11:17

On the ground in Padua (Padova) at the moment.

treadigraph 27th Nov 2019 12:22

Weather looks to be a bit rubbish if they are heading west to the Cannes area - Windy currently shows snow around the Italian Alps and lightning further south plus plenty of heavy rain between!

Wander00 27th Nov 2019 19:15

Not too good in this part of France either

l.garey 28th Nov 2019 08:43

Heavy rain in the region of Switzerland round Lake Geneva. I don't know where they are aiming but it's not nice here.

From what I vaguely recall of the original plan, the intended routing was something like Nice/Cannes, Milan, Zurich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and home. Perhaps some events planned with the sponsors?

l.garey 28th Nov 2019 09:26

Meteoswiss are showing and forecasting heavy rain in both the Geneva and Zurich areas. I doubt if they will be flying around here today.

treadigraph 30th Nov 2019 08:03

They are hoping to make Berlin today.

l.garey 30th Nov 2019 08:13

Berlin? What routing? Are they not going to stop en route, in IWC's homeland? Weather over the Alps at the moment is much better than the last 3 days, but there are clouds on the peaks.

See it's about 500 miles direct, 600 via Zurich. Presume they can go over the top if necessary rather than following the passes.

l.garey 30th Nov 2019 08:27

I saw that, and note that several responders queried why no stop in Switzerland. Maybe they don't need to buy a watch.

Over the top? Need to get high for that around here.

Presume 12000 - 15000 depending on route? Not too sure how high the various Alpine regions are. Presume the oxygen set is functional!

Weather apparently still rubbish.

l.garey 30th Nov 2019 13:17

Treadigraph: Depends on the route. If he flies direct to Friedrichshafen, as is now proposed, he will miss the really big peaks in Switzerland (which he will miss completely, oddly enough). Perhaps "miss" is a bad choice of words! In fact, the last thing you want to do in this region is to be VMC below a layer of cloud trying to follow the valleys and just hop over the cols. A number of people have found that to their cost recently. Once in Friedrichshafen they will have an easier bit going north. And they can take a Zeppelin ride while they're waiting. Incidentally they will just about overfly the home of the accompanying Pilatus.
Good luck to them.

I see they went up to FL120.

See what happens when you take an afternoon nap!

Yes, I recall the recent UK PA-28 crash.

l.garey 30th Nov 2019 14:41

Or the tragic Ju52/3m
Laurence

treadigraph 30th Nov 2019 19:32

I'd forgotten about the Ju52...
