Trident turn-around film at Farnborough:-

Errr "Turnaround"? Looks like an exceptionally poor video with the Farnborough ATIS in the background. Obviously dubbed too as they were passing QNH in Hectopascals and that didn't come in until later.

Err; yes; you seemed to have missed the point of the video which was recreating a scene from ZI's past. ZI is very much in the 21st century now and on display at the FAST museum. Enjoy!

You couldn't re-create a scene from 'ZI's past with that soundtrack, we didn't get ATIS until about 2002, long after the last Trident landed.
Haven't been to Farnborough much since I retired; do you have the whole aircraft or just the flight deck section?

Next time we will switch the radio to the tower! ZI is just bite size you may say, in otherwords just the flight deck section! At least she is 'live' and wearing her 1971 BEA colours. We rescued her remains from a scrap yard in Hampshire back in 2003; her flight deck was just a shell, no instruments, no seats, no control columns, etc. It took a year to restore her and another year to re-wire and get her to work again (stick shaker, stall warning horn, engine fire bell); we can even get an engine to start using the engine start switches linked to a CD player with a recording of a Rolls-Royce Spey starting up; since then she has been on display at the FAST museum and commenced another career appearing in UFO / air safety documentaies and even a pop video! Come down some time and be reunited with an old friend, Trident three G-AWZI. FAST museum open 1000-1600 Saturday & Sunday's, closed over Xmas period though.

I have no affiliation to the FAST museum but as it happens I was a very recent visitor and thoroughly enjoyed the entire collection, but particularly Zulu India. I found the volunteers there (including at least one ex-Trident captain) to be very knowledgeable and friendly and I can certainly recommend it if you are in that area. Keep up the good work!

Just checked my log book. Last flew ZI 27/04/1985 going to Dyce and return.
I note we picked up PLB on 121.5 and helped locate a guy sitting in a dinghy off of Ramsey IOM
Of such are memories made!

Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Association has done a fantastic job of saving unique documentation and artifacts from the former RAE, running on a tiny shoestring with a handful of dedicated volunteers. There is a large amount of absolutely priceless stuff still in containers waiting to be sorted out.

They need some cash but they do a very good deal for life membership........

Did they get the material from the old RAE Museum? I believe it was donated to the Science Museum when DRA (now Qinetiq) closed the old museum, and it included some old log books from Air Traffic Control dating back to the early '50s. We found them in the desk of one of the ex Radio Operators (who eventually became Experimental Flying Control Assistants, then Experimental Flying Support Officers) when he retired. They were passed over to the RAE museum by our SATCO who had no idea how valuable they were and didn't bother to discuss it with us operational staff, and that museum promptly closed, with DRA stating they were in the business of aviation research not aviation nostalgia.(b'stards)
Racking my brains, but I think the name of the last curator was Brian Kerval, who often used to visit the tower to ask about various things.

I believe the present FAST museum is partly made up from the old RAE museum that closed some years back. However, much more has been added to the collection since then through donations and long term loans.

The final part of that video scared me to death! That crew were auto-landing with a failed attitude director!

Just out of interest does anyone know who the crew were in this BEA film? It would be interesting to find out what became of them. I guess all long since retired (like the Trident!)

I believe the S/F/O was called Ted Dunn. He would have retired mid-90's. Not sure about the Captain. The young lady doing the PA became my wife in 1970 and at age 70 is still looking good. We have two airline pilot sons maintaining family tradition.

I understand your concern but I would be very surprised if the sequence ending at 7:20 was other than shots taken in a sim for the camera man's benefit.

For reasons that don't matter I was on the jump seat of a very early Pan Am 747 going into Dulles in 1971. I noticed that a day VMC autoland being done for my benefit was being flown with only one channel of the AP engaged. After the landing I enquired why and got the response "If we select more they argue and the system dumps".

Those were the days.
