So do I mate, but there's quite lot to choose from! Also, for many, cropping is easier than good silhouetting!!

That's precisely what Reg said mate.

safetypee has asked for Open House........

SincoTC 23rd Oct 2011 15:48

Seeing as it's my first free Sunday for a while and a lot of the regulars are away, I may as well keep things ticking over with another easy one!

Just the engine, or what it flew in or maybe should have powered to a place in history!!

Whittle W2/700 Engine. E28/39 & Meteor.

SincoTC 23rd Oct 2011 15:53

For the moment, yes and yes :)

Edit: YES again :D, I said it would be easy!!

The W.2B/700 was to be used in the Miles M.52 supersonic research aircraft. In order to achieve the thrust required for supersonic flight, a version of the engine was planned with a turbine-driven "augmenter" fan(an early form of turbofan) supplying air to a "reheat jetpipe" or afterburner. The augmenter was to be mounted behind the engine, drawing fresh air through ducts surrounding the engine.
Should have broken the sound barrier if Ministerial short-sightedness and cold-feet hadn't prevailed (plus it had an all flying tail too) :ugh:!!

Lightning Mate has control :ok:

Lightning Mate 23rd Oct 2011 16:04

Should have broken the sound barrier

SincoTC 23rd Oct 2011 16:24

Strewth!! Is that the main efflux mate? In the tail?

Doesn't exixt mate!
I knew you'd say that when I didn't put it in quotation marks, but it was a popular phrase in that era!

Lightning Mate 23rd Oct 2011 16:32

It is indeed the jet exhaust mate, but it ain't in the tail. ;)

SincoTC 23rd Oct 2011 16:39

but it ain't in the tail
Hmm, had a feeling it wouldn't be; so are these "gargoyles" on the wing, how many are there and do they each serve a single engine? Are those vanes fixed or moveable?

Lightning Mate 23rd Oct 2011 16:46

One per engine - moveable - on the fusleage....

Wanna bigger pic?

Lightning Mate 23rd Oct 2011 16:57
