Let me introduce myself. I am Adolfo Habongo and I hold the exclusive rights to the films you so badly need.

If you could be so kind as to transfer US$5000 to my account with:

Rippov Bank Limited
S'cam Foreshore
Lagos City
Nigeria

I will ensure you are entirely satisfied.

Best and truly honest regards,

Adolf H

That's handy.... I'm waiting for a sizeable transfer of funds into my account from a Mr Yuara Mugg who is also resident in Nigeria....

If you send me the files required, I will instruct him to pay you directly, thereby reducing unnecessary administration on both our parts.

I await with anticipation..

:ok:

... and back to the VC10. Earlier this year ex Vickers F/E Roy Mole passed away and this triggered me to try to find out who else worked for Vickers as Flight Test personnel during the VC10's development. I've posted a question about this in the Flight Testing forum and this turned up the following list:

Chief Test Pilot:
Gabe Robb 'Jock' Bryce
Brian Trubshaw

Deputy Chief Test Pilot:
Mike Lithgow (I know that he did fly VC10s on test on some occasions)
Who took over this post after the unfortunate 1-11 crash in October 1963?

Other test pilots:
Bill Cairns
Peter Baker
Eddie McNamara
John Cochrane
Lew Roberts
Dennis Hayley-Bell (Not sure of his first name)
Eric Bucklow
Johnny Hackett
Brian Powell
Dinty Moores
Dave Glazer
Roy Radford
Chuck Thrower
Alan Smith
Desmond 'Dizzy' Addicott

Flight Engineers:
Roy Mole

Navigators:
George Wood

Chief Flight Test observer:
Roy Holland
Chris Mullen

Flight Test observers:
Ian Muir
Peter Dirs
Stan Fincham
Bob Bishop
Arthur Fuller
Brian Ganmmon
Dick Wright

Flight test engineers:
Dick Storey

I figured that I might get some more information in these forums. My question is twofold:
- Would anyone be able to share any details/stories about Roy Mole? I've been in touch with his family and they would welcome any information as they don't have the full details of his career.
- Who can name other Vickers/BAC flight test personnel from the 60s?

Thanks!

Good idea, Jhieminga.

Not sure he would qualify for your list, but this short obituary might be of interest:

Brian Powell

Other BAC flight test pilots I know of:-

Dinty Moores,
Dave Glazer,
Roy Radford,
Chuck Thrower,
Alan Smith.

These guys were at Hurn on the Viscount and 1-11 in the '60s and '70s. I don't know if any of them were involved in the VC-10.

I think Peter Baker was on the Concorde test team for a while.
I flew with him in the late '80s at Channel Express on the Herald along with Alan Smith.

Jhieminga 15th Aug 2014 18:25

He definitively qualifies Chris, thanks for the pointer to the obituary, it makes interesting reading!

I've also added your suggestions dixi188, thanks!

I've edited the list above to avoid endless copies. Once we reach a new page I'll copy it again.

Interesting to see Dennis Hayley Bell on the list of test pilots as he later worked in the Hatfield sales department for a bit. I think I knew at the time that he'd been a pilot and possibly even that he was with Vickers, but I'd long forgotten.
Was that Observer Chris Mollon perhaps - again one of that name cropped up in the sales department when we were all BAe.

Jhieminga 16th Aug 2014 21:12

Interesting bit of information about Dennis Hayley-Bell, thanks! Does that also mean that I got his first name correct then?

As for observer Chris Mullen, I've had a quick look and have his name spelled this way in an article written by Sir George on the occasion of the VC10's 25th birthday (see here: The VC10 - 25th Anniversary that page on my site is mostly a verbatim copy of the text that was included with a special philatelic cover). I could check some other sources but I remember seeing it written as 'Mullen' in several places. Perhaps a different Chris?

Edit: I've also just added Flight Test Engineer Dick Storey, his name was hiding in plain sight on my site here: http://www.vc10.net/Photos/early_days.html

I thought I'd give this thread a kick again to say that: XR808 'Bob' (or at least the forward fuselage) has been safely delivered to RAF Cosford today!

I saw the clip on the Midlands News tonight. It was a shame they didn't mention the 25 years it spent with BOAC and British Airways. They were under the impression it served its time with the RAF.

Jhieminga 21st Jun 2015 21:49

They are correct I'm afraid. XR808 was delivered to the RAF on 7th July 1966 and spent 47 years flying for 10 Squadron and 101 Squadron. See here for the details: C/n 828 - XR808

Jhieminga 5th Nov 2015 14:48

Update: XR808 'Bob' is now complete and on public display at the RAF Museum Cosford: VC10 rebuild is now complete

GJD Services has done a wonderful job on this mammoth task!

Is it just me that would have liked to have seen it repainted in the original 'shiny fleet' colour scheme as when it was delivered to No 10 squadron?

Perhaps you should ask the 10 Sqn Association for a whip-round to pay for a respray?

Hey, why do it the simple way when you can do it the complicated (slow and expensive) way?!!!!

I remember when we had a VC-10 in the hangar the tug would not start, so it was all hands on deck we had to push the aircraft out of the hangar, so that another tug could get in and do the rest of the job.

I appreciate that your request was some years ago, but may I suggest that test pilot Desmond 'Dizzy' Addicott could be added to your list.
