This might last a little longer!

Flap40's challenge
Bristol Filton early 1930s perhaps?
|
Dix points!
|
Flap40's challenge
Thanks Flaps40, I must admit the reason I recognised it so quickly was that I had a slightly later photograph (1935) of the same hangers as a possible challenge.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...School1935.jpg next challenge to follow shortly. |
Next challenge
|
Mel's Challenge
It is UK date circa 1933
|
How about Shoreham.
|
Mel's Challenge
Not Shoreham Kieron
|
Whitchurch.
|
Mel's Challenge
Not Whitchurch, but like Whitchurch the land became a housing estate. A very famous aircraft was in fact built on this airfield.

Christchurch/Airspeed Ambassador

Mel's Challenge
Not Christchurch this airfield was a little further north and the aircraft I was somewhat smaller.
Mel |
Riddle me this:
Wood that be a few Miles away? |
Mel's Challenge
Slightly more than a few miles away but not a Miles aircraft. The aircraft company that built this famous aircraft was to move even further north a couple of years after this photograph was taken.
|
I would say Gravesend, but I can't think of anything built there; certainly it's a housing estate though. Not Brooklands either although the building does bear some resemblance to the old clubhouse which still stands, but it's an industrial estate not housing.

Mel's Challenge
chevvron. It was indeed Gravesend Airport :ok::D.
Opened in 1932, an airfield built near Chalk and operated by Gravesend Aviation Ltd served Gravesend and has a significant place in the history of British aviation. From 1933 to 1936 it was home to Percival Aircraft, building the famous Mew Gull racing aircraft among others, before the company moved to Luton. After 1936 Essex Aero was based on the site, and maintained the airfield's link with racing aeroplanes by preparing the de Havilland DH.88 Comets and Alex Henshaw's Percival Mew Gull that set the record for a flight from England to South Africa. The airfield site today has become a housing estate called RIVERVIEW PARK and little can be identified of the original use, but Leander Drive and Vigilant Way seem to have been built on the original perimeter track. "CASCADES" Leisure Centre in Thong Lane which is between Vigilant Way and Leander Drive has a plaque which is dedicated to the airmen of WWII which served at Gravesend Airport. The Control Tower from the Airport was located in the grounds |
Can I play?
These are easy because mine are all airborne shots....
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...hnson/LSI1.jpg |
Sumburgh and open house. Too easy, I worked there for a month in '72 and did a couple of 'compulsory' flights with Loganair!
|
That took 5 minutes!
Ok, in which case, you'll get this too... http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...pproach-31.jpg |
Wick rwy 31?
|
<Pedantic mode ON>
Pardon me, but aren't the "rules" of this game that only the winner of the previous challenge should post the next challenge or specifically offer Open House? <Pedantic mode OFF> |
Correct, but Chevron has declared open house so I guess JB007's second post is "legal"
On another matter, can someone point me to the list of airfield that have already been posted? |
List as at 16 Nov 2007
|
Flew in there (LSI) a couple of times, here's a pretty good vid -

Given that I believe that my guess of Wick was correct for JB's last post, here is the next one.
Not a lot to go on but it is UK 1930's http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~jode...s/quiz2711.jpg |
Flap40's challenge
Might be Folkstone Airfield, I know the aircraft is the Spartan Cruiser
|
Not Folkstone - further north.
Aircraft ID is correct though. |
Is it Renfrew?
|
Yes it is Renfrew. If you put "Spartan Criser" into google images then this is the first omage that you get:eek:
|
And there's me flicking through old fashioned books to find Renfrew pictures....next one (what is it about airfields and graveyards?)

Moondance challenge
Is it Broadford Airport, (SKF), Isle of Skye?
|
Broadford it is (is it still open?) Well done evansb
|
Thanks Moondance. A company was planning on Dash-7 service way back in 2003, but I haven't heard of any current sked carriers into Broadford recently. The airport operator is listed with a tel: 01478 612727, fax: 01478 612255. Here is the next 'Which Aerodrome?'
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...40/4030316.jpg |
New boy here. Is it time for a clue after 24 hours, evansb?
My guess is Northern hemisphere, probably North American continent and, judging by the length of runway, lack of dispersals and size of car parks - a manufacturing base? ghnry |
The airport is in the United States, and it was the home of an aircraft manufacturer.
|
Evans's chalenge
Looks like William T Piper Airport in Lock Haven PA.
Floor open if I deserve it. |
Sorry, not Piper's plant in Pennsylvania.
|
Hughes, Culver City California.
|
Flap40 is correct:ok: The Hughes Airport was at one time the largest private airport in the U.S. The runway wasn't paved until after WW.II.
The giant Hughes H-4 "Hercules" flying boat was built there, and trucked to the harbour at Long Beach. The airport was closed in 1985. Hughes also built this giant there. You have control. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...iggestHeli.jpg |
Well done Flap40. I was getting there slowly. Last went there in a Citation in 1980
