The Secret Horsepower Race
Very, very geeky book.
My WW2 Fighter Engines book is now available from the publisher.

Later in WW2 the Germans (after a year of disaster) improved their aero engines by Chrome plating their valves. This used very little Chrome, but was a very intensive process for an application like a valve with about 27 operations per valve….
This is fascinating. How did you learn this?
A fair question, the answer is because I was the first person to totally digitize the entire surviving German Air Ministry stenographic meeting records from Microfilm.
So I could scan through about 15 million words digitally and so find all the important meetings regarding these issues, which had been impractical for any researchers/authors of the past to find using manual microfilm readers with 35mm reels of film.
With which it takes a day to look over even 5% of one just one reel of frames.
I found one meeting randomly talking about "valves" so I did a keyword search for "valves" and looked at the search window filling with results, and thought "wow, ok, I`ve found something!"

Hi Calum, as a chemist I've always been really interested in better understanding the german fuel spec, how it was different and why. Is there anything you could point me towards on this?
Fuel chemisty is a big area, my book contains a lot on this (I drafted in help from a fuels chemist in Germany when I wrote it).
