Vulcan display in NZ

Some footage of Avro Vulcan B2 XH562 putting on a display as part of an airshow at Nelson Airport in New Zealand, back in February 1971.

The Vulcan was operating out of RNZAF Base Ohakea.

Let's not forget an earlier Vulcan display at the opening of Wellington airport:

Go around with bent undercarriage at Wellington:

Crash landing at Ohakea:

On the same day, a Sunderland did an accidental touch and go:

I never liked Wellington airport.. Bugger of a place in my experience. Even the B767 could have difficulties there. At least you had an excuse for a crappy landing which happened a lot in the B767. Very happy to be promoted off that one.

Yes, it's called Windy Wellington for a reason. The southern threshold of the north-south runway is on the beach of the Cook Strait, which acts as a venturi, accelerating the predominantly westerly winds to high velocities, at right angles to the runway!

My friend's dad (who died just over a year-and-a-half ago) flew Lockheed L.188 Electras and Douglas DC-8s into and out of Wellington Airport. And in the 1950s, he flew Short Solent Mk.4 flying-boats into and out of the adjacent Evans Bay on trans-Tasman services.

His final command was on DC-10s, so his career as an airline pilot advanced from four-engine flying-boats all the way to wide-body jets. He also flew DC-6s in the 1950s.

Writing about Windy Wellington and the Cook Strait reminded me of the 1968 Wahine ferry disaster, which is not well known outside New Zealand:

I hadn't heard about the Wahine until I was visiting Wellington and saw the monument on the harbour foreshore, which incorporates one of the Wahine's masts:

megan,

Perhaps I should have said "not well known in the Northern Hemisphere".
