Lost Painting of Jean Batten

An oil painting of the Kiwi aviator Jean Batten has been unearthed after almost three decades in the back room of a bank. The painting was discovered by an archives manager in the bank room of an ANZ branch in Newtown, Wellington.

ANZ has now gifted the painting to Motat, where it will be displayed next to other Jean Batten memorabilia in the Aviation Display Hall.

“The painting portraying Batten in the same year as her record-breaking solo flight across the South Atlantic is a significant addition to the Motat collection.”
