Where is this?

I can't post this on the Which Aerodrome Mk.III thread, as I don't know the location.

Given that three of the Chipmunks are from 2 FTS, I'd always assumed that this was Church Fenton, but I can't make the location fit the photo that appeared in WA Mk.III post #10,100.

For the record, the Chipmunks are (from the top):
WP807/15 (CFS)
WG478/20 (2 FTS)
WK507/36 (2 FTS)
WK643/39 (2 FTS)
WD347/03 (CFS).

Could this be Little Rissington?

My first thought was Rissy due to the trees close to the apron but the colour scheme on 4 of the aircraft wasn't introduced until after CFS moved out of Rissy.

And then they went to Scampton, but it doesn't look like Scampton either.

Chevvron: According to Wikepedia (so it must be right) CFS moved from Little Rissington in 1976. I couldn't find any other date/base reference.

The red/white/grey scheme first appeared in 1970. WK643 arrived at 2 FTS on 6.10.1971, while WK507 left on 27.9.1973, which dates the photo.

Yes Spook, that's what I wrote then. The location was based on an assumption - as I've explained, I'm having doubts now.

Little Rissington would be my shout, looking on Google Earth at the Easterly hangar nearest to the threshold of 23, The additional newer concrete path, and the curving edge of the pan gives it away for me.

Not allowed to post links yet, but it should easily found.

I have to agree it looks like Little Rissington to me. The only other airfields I recollect with trees on the line are Linton and Scampton.

2 FTS Church Fenton.

edit: I have operated from Rissie and Church Fenton - flying Chipmunks from the latter.

It cannot be Church Fenton as (disregarding the trees) none of its hangars have wide and narrow paths leading to the ramp. Also the edge of the grass is curved in the photo but straight edged in the GE view of CF.

The easternmost hangar at LR matches perfectly though.

I would agree that LR (Hangar 4/Building 80) looks likely - except for the light coloured path which is not in the same position as later images (not that it couldn't have been moved!).

Thank you very much gents for confirming my growing suspicion that it was Little Rissington.

I have a personal link to this photo: I'm lucky enough to own WG478 and regularly fly WK507 (seen parked together in the photo). What are the odds that 45 years after that photo was taken both Chipmunks would not only remain airworthy but remain together sharing a hangar in Australia?

Rissy would be my best guess based on initial feeling. The Horse Chestnut trees are what I based my assumption on.

I would also say Little Rissington and the most easterly hangar. Looking at Google Earth it shows the identical wide an narrow paths leading from the ramp to the hangar and I’m sure that is the hangar where the Chipmunk squadron was located

Again, thank you. The easternmost hangar at LR it is.
