DC-8 cargo hold fire suppression system?
I seem to recall that both the DC-6 and Viscounts had CO2 cargo hold fire suppression systems. Can't find anything on the DC-8 and am thinking that the earlier models might still have been pre-Halon. Anyone?
TIA
TIA
As best I can recall DC8's originally had no lower cargo smoke/fire detection or suppression which was the same for other airliners of that vintage (707, CV880, L188, etc). They were class D compartments relying on oxygen starvation to prevent/suppress fires.
CV880 has it correct. No fire suppression in the lower holds except the smothering effect oof a sealed compartment. By the time the B707/Comet/DC-8 came out Halon or its equivalent were the fire agent in use. Halon replaced the CO2 systems on the L-1049G and H series Super Constellations. I have a blank spot in my memory for the DC6 and DC-7.
