I've heard the same thing, but it's not clear. All the type number prefixes are DH and the company muddied the waters by using all caps in its advertising.
Of course we could start a discussion about whether there should be an "e" in Avro.

and to formally include "The" in the company's name.
Looks up apprenticeship agreement, only to find it's in an envelope with "The De Havilland Aircraft Company Limited" in the pre-printed address and it refers to "the De Havilland Companies" throughout.
