Warmtoast - re your "grainy" press photos, there is a sequence in the programme "Jet - When Britain Ruled the Skies" (Part two) which shows a newsreel of the departure of the aforementioned royals. There is a suggestion in the film that as several Comet 1s had already crashed by this date, the use of the Comet to transport senior members of the royal family was an attempt to bolster up confidence in the aircraft. This was of course before the loss of the two Comet 1s in the Med, which finally sealed their fate.
