I was under the impression that this was an urban myth that had been put to bed some years ago on Pprune.

Just looking at some of the other tripe on that website, it wouldn't surprise me in the least, Redhill.

Yes, some strange stuff there and some excellent photos strangely titled
e.g. the so-called Beginnings of Rallying which are interesting photos which are simply motor racing and speed trials and need captions.

40-odd years ago I was told that the Grand Slam casing was one which had been buried at the end of WW2, AFAIK at Scampton. When it was wanted to be put on show its position was sent, with an instruction to dig. Can anyone confirm?

Grand Slam

!958 ? Lancaster and Grand Slam. S for Sugar wasn't put on display at the main gate until April 1959, secondly lots of claims that the Grand Slam it was taken away on a Queen Mary trailer- the vast majority of Queen Mary Trailers at this time were only 3 ton capacity evenly distributed, a few newer models were 5 ton; certainly nothing like the weight of the Grand Slam. This tale seems to surface every couple of years ?/
