RNAS pilots wearing Sam Browne belts

I am reading an Osprey publication "Aircraft of the Aces 062 - Sopwith Triplane aces of WWI" and I notice that most of the photos show RNAS pilots wearing Sam Browne belts. I would have thought that those would be worn only by Army/RFC pilots. The Americans wore them later in WWI of course. Wiki has a photo of Pershing wearing one and he was the boss!
