I can't see a petition prevailing over commercial interests, though it would be a shame to see it leave the UK.

Of course if the 2,500 people who have signed so far stumped up a grand each, they could buy it between them.

I'm reminded of the various occasions where the government has intervened to save various artworks from leaving the country.

Personally, I'd be much more worried about seeing a Hawker leaving the UK than a Picasso.

Yes, but.....

It'll simply go to whoever bids the most. Far rarer a/c have been allowed to leave the UK with nary a murmur, - such as airworthy Mosquitos.

Since when have petitions been able to affect the sale of a privately owned aircraft?

Waste of time and energy, 'petitions' are not worth the paper they're written on

I'm sure the owner will take money from whoever pays if he's chosen to sell it.

An export licence can be refused if a "cultural object" is "so closely connected with our history and national life that its departure would be a misfortune". http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/media/..._version-1.pdf

Cultural objects include "means of transport more than 75 years old" - that should include aircraft, but it seems that the Hurricane was delivered new in August 1940.

Sadly, I agree with Chuffer. A petition is a complete waste of time. After all, it's not as if it is the only Hurricane in the UK.
