Save Bourn Airfield

Hi All

Just to give you a quick heads up. As you may already be aware, former RAF Bourn is under threat from property developers. Today RAF Bourn is an active GA airfield and whilst few of its original wartime buildings remain, Bourn's three original wartime runways and the majority of its taxiways/hard standings are still in existence. As you are aware, this is rare these days.

Bourn airfield has been put forward by the South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) to be developed into 3,500 houses as part of the South Cambridgeshire housing plan but there is still time left to save this historic site. Even though there were 1,700+ objections to re-developing Bourn Airfield during the consultation process, the SCDC are still pushing this historic site forward as a potential housing development.

Bourn Airfield needs your help to survive, we need word of mouth and support to make people aware of what we are about to lose. In Cambridgeshire alone RAF Alconbury, RAF Oakington, RAF Wyton, RAF Bassingbourn, RAF Waterbeach and RAF Bourn are all earmarked for mass housing developments. We are in the process of losing our history and our heritage.

The other fact is this; regardless of how you feel about Bourn Airfield, no airfield in the UK is safe these days and your local airfield could be next. We need to band together to stop this madness.

Bought my dad a flying experience at Bourn and he had a fantastic time as did us family. We were all made to feel very welcome.

Petition signed. I used to instruct in the area and flew in and out of Bourne on a number of occasions. Still have mates in the area. Will spread the word. Best of British!

Does it actually get used much? I have done a lot of flying out of Gransden Lodge lately and NEVER seen anything moving at Bourn.

Did my aerobatic Instructor's Rating at Bourn in 1982 with Lindsay Brown. Four hours in the Chipmunk and the last hour in a Piston Provost (hand-swung to start!).

Hope it can be saved from the developers.

Sadly, I don't think you've got a chance. Same way Waterbeach will go, best you can hope for is a memorial like Witchford or Mepal. Regardless anyone says on here the CC will go ahead.

Yes, you don't stand a chance, not when they need to build "badly needed" & "affordable" new houses to accommodate the explosion of immigrants and single parent households, making developers a tidy sum in the process of course and providing jobs for people who can't frankly do much else. In my experience local authorities will always have their way in the end, even if it takes 30 years and goes against all local feeling or historical precedent. So much for local democracy and due process. Having said all that though I only went into Bourn once, back in the late 90's and the place looked on the verge of dereliction then. The "clubhouse" looked like a tramps hostel and I was worried that the gear would not last the length of the landing/takeoff runs!!

Thank you John sodding Prescott for that wonderful Bill that designated aerodromes as "brown field" sites. Funny how nobody rushed to reverse it, though.
