Admittedly I would never attempt such a thing myself but it wasn't really around the world; more of a tour of the Northern Hemisphere. Their routing as shown on the side of the aircraft was just under 15,000 miles, nearly 10,000 miles short of the Earths circumference.

Regardless; it was a fantastic performance.

Nice aircraft, but the flight was not necessarly out of the ordinary.

I did UK to Australia in a DH114 Heron with gypsy engines.

I am now about to do the USA across the Atlantic then to Australia in an Aero Commander; again just an ordinary flight with a lot of water.

Ya..not a big deal for sure. I think the whole idea of it was to Break the record set by Howard Hughes set in 1938 with close to the same aircraft. Yup... Anyone could do it. Well, No one else in the world attempted to break this record before and after these guy's did so, give them some credit.

The remarkable thing about the 1939 Hughes flight was the demonstration of aviation progress in the 11 years since Lindbergh. Hughes' Lockheed 14 made the first leg NYC-LBG in half the time as the Ryan NYP, and carried five vs one man.

I'm just curious if anyone has any pics or articles of this aircraft during the press trips around Europe and the Canary Islands before the Round the World flight. Pics from the Paris Air Show as well. Thanks.

Probably faster than I did it, took me nearly three months to go around the world (west to east, wrong way) in 2005 and I was flying a jet.

Sorry, nothing particularly special....

Back in Dec 1986, this was though:

Around the world unrefuelled.... Rutan and Yeager (not Chuck) in the Voyager.

That's true BEagle. Rutan did it in a Brand New Aircraft designed just for this. There has been a lot of incredible advances in solar and computer technology. The Lockheed those guys flew around the world was a very old aircraft and was previously used as a chicken coupe in a junk yard in the Bahamas and had to be completely restored just for this flight. I think it was Special !
