Luftwaffe fighter pilot of World War ll

Not long ago, a few years at most, a civic authority in Germany or Austria decided that it was unspeakable to have, as was in fact the case, a grave stone in a local cemetery to mark the resting place of a leading Luftwaffe fighter pilot of World War ll.

That stone was therefore removed abd, as I recall, the pilot's remains moved to an unmarked grave.

Can anyone help me: (a) Who was the pilot? and (b) What was the place?

Davaar, you are probably thinking about the outrageous insult bestowed on the Major Walter Nowotny by some Austrian tree-huggers in 2003.

'Nowi' was well-respected by both Allied and Axis aircrew alike.

You can read more at http://www.pprune.org/aviation-histo...r-nowotny.html .

This 'issue' dragged on without a firm decison for years after this, and is still the subject of ongoing discussions, but as of a few months ago, he's still where he was buried.
