At the time of the changeover to the current alphabet I had a CO who was quite religious.
Came the big day and he was leading the first pair on the program.
He got airborne and called changing to approach which was on N. He knew it was no longer Nan but couldn't remember November, and the call to tower went something like,
"Red airborne, changing to N..err...........
N..err.....Nonconformist"

During the changeover, which happened while I was at FTS I think, there was this story about his chap who was asked to repeat his callsign...
Pilot; "Golf Alpha Xray etc etc..."
ATC : "Say again the first letter"
Pilot: " I spell GEORGE OBOE LOVE FOX - GOLF!"
