Question DON'T FORGET- BISMARK CHANNEL 4 (9:00 PM 18/12/01)

I would argue that this act by the Swordfish had more of an impact on WWII than Taranto....so why do the RN guys (and girls nowadays)....consume half of the worlds Port output in one night for Taranto?

Just a thought?

The Swordfish did not SINK the Bismark, only slow it down, and after all it was only ONE ship. Taranto had a pretty devasting effect on the Italian navy and (although not a desired result), was thought to be the example followed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbour.

Good morning all,
I watched the fist showing and then this current two parter, I felt that it was a very good and well researched set of programmes/films, a very, very sad reminder, in these modern days of the price paid by ordinary men, not really very long ago who fought each other for the benefit of us who followed.
I wonder if as many would ever do the same again!
My Regards

I think they said they wouldn't in 1938, when the Oxford Union debated and passed a resolution that they "...would not fight for King and Country". It caused quite a stir at the time and much pontificating about degenerate, gilded youth. But when the chips were down they turned up trumps. OUAS alone produced quite a few heros, including some articulate ones - eg, Richard Hilary (The Last Enemy). <img src="frown.gif" border="0">
