TTN, I'd agree with you if this were a difficult challenge... I don't think it is; it should have been very easy to get from 'staff' to 'pike'.
The clue is pretty clear that some fiddling needed to be done with the end of the word.
If you've read my posts you'll know that there is every sign it will be solved very soon indeed, so I'm puzzled by your remark:

As you say, Staff to Pike wasn't difficult,once Tip turned out to be a false lead; nor was identifying Aubagne - Foreign Legion - Kepi and re-mixing it to confirm Pike. Was Chopra's dictionary web address (SKEPDIC.COM( also intended to head in this direction?
I'm still at a loss as to where to go for the rest of the clue though; perhaps my little grey cells are becoming tired, but I did finish both the Sunday Telegraph "Enigmatic" and the Observer "AZED" on Sunday. If I don't make a break through soon I'll read your solution with much interest

Tip wasn't a false lead. You needed to find which hat someone in Aubagne wears (a Kepi) and then 'tip' it (re-arrange it) for Pike, as you did.
Mr Chopra's dictionary was to help you get from stiffness to Young's Modulus and from going around to the rotational constant. His web address is a happy co-incidence which I hadn't spotted.
I reckon you'll have it by the time I've finished dinner, if you are watching the forum. We're having two courses!

Young's Modulus and the Rotational Constant will tidy things up to find a forum favourite; our antipodean correspondents will be pleased.

It occurs to me that some players may be having problems because they haven't kept an eye on other threads in this forum of late, and are not aware of the aircraft type. See my response to Herod's attempt above, and ponder Gwyneth's airfield's long-term residents for more help...

Watching with interest - I have a horrible suspicion that when someone gets it, or you reveal the answer, I will never have heard of the damned aircraft.

Even if you were, had you reviewed the Challenge, What Cockpit, or Heikki's Silhouette Challenge threads, you should be aware of this aircraft type.
It has featured in all of them in the last two years.

My reply to TTN crossed with sabredog's guess..
Sabredog got rid of Young's Modulus, E, and replaced it with the Rotational Constant, A, to get the mighty Pika...
