50 Years ago - UN DC-6 - Hammarskjold

Has it really been 50 years since the accident?

The crew had been "on duty" 19 hours when they CFIT on landing. Prior flights during the crisis suggests they were likely very tired. Pundits point to fatigue, which was not considered a major cause of accidents in those days.

UN Sec. Gen. crash in 1961

Interesting take on Dag Hammarskjold's crash in Congo in '61. Explanation seems to be pilot fatigue, which was not considered a major factor 50 years ago.

This is perhaps a better link to the report to the UN on the crash:

Links to documents

It's available in a number of languages, and is fairly fast.

There are also discussions of the various theories about the accident on the Wikipedia pages for Hammarskjold and the memorial site in Zambia.
