Certainly classed as a Flame Damper,Graeme,and is also of WW2 vintage.

Terrence, if I 'mentally' remove the damper from me mind - what's left, is what would/should identify the aircraft?

An Axis bomber aircraft,Graeme. I am not too sure that by removing the Flame Damper, it would readily identify the aircraft/engine type. The photograph is available on the Web.

Savoia-Marchetti SM-82 I believe. I am intrigued to know if it was fitted to only one of the three engines?

SM.82 Flame Damper of German design, but I have no idea if they were fitted to all three engines.

It does. But I think they're a bit bigger - I'm estimating around 4 or 5 inches in diameter. Only produces approximately 35 lbs of thrust.

There are two of these "pipes", separated by 27 ft of rotor blade.
