Which Aerodrome Mk III
SE Asia...VYETNAM
A question about Stanley. Does anyone know why 09/27 has such large threshold displacements? Saving maintenance costs?

The runway was extended significantly immediately after the 1982 conflict in order to accommodate F4s. This was predominately done use MEXE/PSP metal 'matting'. Once Mount Pleasant was open, there was little/no need to keep the long runway.
36/18 is a tad under 300m short; plenty for an Islander and indeed the Do228 that used to float around. 27/09 is about 1200m.

Time for a clue I think. This picture is taken from just below the Southern threshold looking roughly East. There are many of these things around here.
What drives them contributes significantly to local tourism.

ea200,
Is the tourism related to wind surfing?

A different south? South of France?

Not the South of France but a lot closer. This runway was carved out of the hillside in 1994 but abandoned not long after, following (I am told) a change of local government.
