I was priveleged to be a music student at Newcastle University when this great gentleman of British music was Prof., and although I had occasion to talk to him quite a lot, I didn't chance upon talking about his war career, except gleaning that he'd been in ENSA.

A recent look on Google/Wiki reveals that he spent the war in the RAF but gives no further details. Does anyone know what was his trade? Aircrew? AC.1? Mess pianist-in-residence? I'm very curious.

I understand it's a bit of an arcane request, but then, that's an AH&N speciality!
