Gooney Bird anniversary

17 December 1935 is the date the DC-3 first flew. I'm not too sure, but I believe the prototype was actually an AA DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport) with Wright engines.

Must be something about 17th December. It's another anniversary as well.

No kidding??

BTW - Boeing aerobuilders a year ago cursed their new plastic airplane right from the start by NOT making first flight on Dec. 17. Very poor karma.

Lovely photos, A30yoyo. Wonder how many more lie in that digital archive? Is there an index?

I think they were taken a few years after 1935, though, because of the Hydromatic prop domes (full feathering). The first ships had counterweight prop hubs.

CW Cushman archive

'Cushman archive' in Google gets you there....a search 'Chicago airplane' brings up colour Stratoliners again from 1940...there aren't that many planes in the archive ,though....

OT aircraft photo - Caroline Mars in Chicago

Our family went to the 1948 Railroad Fair - and as if to steal the show, the Caroline Mars tied up nearby. I distinctly remember it. Note the Adler Planetarium to the right - and this was about the time Meigs Field opened.
