Shackleton? Sure it's been discussed before.

A very sad picture. My log book tells me I flew her in Nov 58 when she was still factory fresh and had that "new car" smell.

Look due north of the 14 threshold, just south of the 2nd minor road and you will see the T tail and more remains of a russian airliner which crashed sometime in the early 70's.The wreck was carted off the end end of the runway and subsequently abandoned.

That must have been seriously factory fresh. I never flew in a Shack (or Hastings, Beverley, Varsity and others) that didn't have that nostalgia inducing scent of hydraulic fluid and Avgas, with a trace of vomit and elsan fluid.

Sitting in a Provost (the proper Leonides sort, not Nancy JP) the other day brought it all back.

This is the wreck of Tu-104 OK-MDE of CSA which had a landing accident here in Aug. 1973. The accident report states that it was landing on R14 when it skidded off the side of the runway 150m from the end - but I suspect from it's location that it was the reciprocal R32 it was in fact landing on.

On a trip to Cyprus in the 1990's I noticed this wreck in the field to the north of the disused airfield which now houses the UN Peace keeping force. I asked the young Scottish 'Blue Beret' who was on guard at the nearby north entrance whether I could go out to the wreck and take a few piccies...
"Sure", he says, "but watch out for the mines in the field.... and see that watch tower over there ? (points north) They're Turkish guards and technically it's in the Turkish bit so they may shoot at you."

Ahhh ha... maybe not. A few long distance piccies I took.

Here's a piccie from Airliners.net taken by someone with a better lens than mine:

Is the Trident still there ? i've looked but can't find it perhaps those with more eagle eyes could put me in the right direction if it is
thank you
After a change of glasses and a little more dilligence Ive found it.!!!!!

Just after the partition of the island B.E.A. sort and got permission to inspect the a/c and found 2 a.c only 1 worth salvaging both had bullet holes in them but DAB was beyond repair so was reduced to spares all the avionics and engines were removed DAA holes were patched and flown depressurised back to the U.k and I think reregistered and used by the regional network after a lengthy overhaul.

Yes they were brand spanking new from the factory to the MU to the squadron. The MK3, unlike the Hastings, Beverley, and Varsity had full interior trim and floor covering. Eventually the sweaty leather and hydraulic smell won.

I would like to hear again Don Ross's account of getting the last 1-11 out as the Rag Heads were approaching NIC.

I believe that XF700 was a Phase 3 aircraft?

The Trident is still there and is pretty much complete.

The terminal building is as it was when the doors were locked in 1974. The check-in desks, passport control and restaurants are still there.

We are talking about 1958, no phase 3 in 1958. The 1958 model had the
full trim.

Krakatoa

Many thanks. I incorrectly interpreted the /3 on this list

UK Serials

as refering to Phase 3.

The Trident salvaged from Nicosia was the former Kuwait Airways 1E
5B DAD. It was given its original reistration GASWU and operated with
BA until 1980.

Another damaged Cyprus Airways Trident (5B-DAC) was repaired and returned from Nicosia to the UK in 1977. As GAVFB it flew with BA until 1982, and was then taken to Duxford where I believe it still resides.

Shackleton MR3 ph3

Captain Airclues, you are correct - it is a phase 3, or at least it was when it left the RAF!
I think the reason for the apparent anomoly is that some of the MR3s left the factory before there was a need to update them. I'm sure that I have read that somewhere on the net! If I recall correctly, during the build of the latter end of the batch, some were brought up to phase 3 standard, then the initial issues were returned for the same modifications later.
I'm not absolutely certain of my facts but I believe that generally speaking, I am correct.
Just had a Google: Good info here: Untitled but it wasn't the page I remember reading.
Best regards, Aerials
