Kololo Airstrip

All the African nostalgia has got me wondering. Does anyone have any information on the history/background of Kololo airstrip in Kampala? Many years ago I used to live adjacent to it: even then (mid-60's) it had obviously been unused for many years, with just a few isolated thin shreds of tarmac amongst the murram. The only piece of information I can remember is that it possibly had a connection with the Police Air Wing - but googling only brings up data on its current useage. Anyone?

Didn't even know there was an airstrip there but in the late 50s we used to live on Kololo Hill.
