BAe Samlesbury gate guardians

Apols if this topic has already been discussed - I had a quick search but didn't find anything, but maybe I wasn't alert.

Drove past Samlesbury on the A59 today. They have a Lightning and a Canberra as gate guardians, but frankly both look rather sad. A visit from my pressure jetter would be a good start to get the mildew off them - but I suspect they really would benefit from some skilled intervention. What do BAe apprentices do as projects these days?

Has anybody got any inside knowledge/influence on their fate?

I can remember as a boy in the late Fifties/Sixties (!) at QEGS Blackburn seeing Canberras coming out of Samlesbury over our playing fields at Lammack.

The prevailing westerlies and regular rain in the area will give them a good wash down! I pass them regularly and they don't look too bad, you must have really sloooowed down to clock the mildew! That said, you would have thought BAe could keep these two examples of Lancashires aircraft production history in better than average condition.

I am informed that they are to be scrapped, due heavy corrosion. Which begs the question as to why BAe did not preserve them properly in the first instance. Hardly a major drain on financial resources as you say. At least there is the Lightning at Warton ..... for now.

That's what I have heard, and guess what, all down to the dreaded 'H & S' Can't risk anyone getting hurt looking after them

Smile BB

Sorry mods and everyone, a little off thread, even if I did fly Canberras.

BB, your name has always intrigued me as my dear old Dad flew Brewster Buffalos with No 453 Sqn RAAF from Sembawang in 1941. PM me if you like.

Again sorry for the drift.
