IL-62 at Stolln, Germany

I found a thread about this in Jet Blast and wanted to resurrect it in a way.

It is about an IL-62 that was donated to the village of Stolln in Germany by Interflug in commemoration of Otto Lilienthal.

They landed it......wait for it...........in a field!

If you've got a large, hard enough field, then no problem. At least two VULCANS and 1 COMET were landed at RAF HALTON many years ago. Small grass field!!!!

In fact three Vulcans were flown in to Halton. I remember seeing the second of the two when I was at the nearby primary school and the third aircraft put in an appearance during my secondary school's sports day.
It was rather more interesting than the sports!

PS Can't remember which 'marks' they were, but there was one example of each of the silver, white and full camouflage versions.

Hi, None of the Above. I was a Staff Cadet on the Gliding School there at the time the Comet was planned. No less a person than John Cunningham came to have a look at the field, stuck his heel in the ground, and said 'that'l do' It arrived the next day, I wasn't there at the time, but I believe the great man himself brought it in.
