DC3 G--ANEG ex Don Everall, Executive Air Transport

Anyone got any memories of this aircraft which spent time at Wolverhampton, Elmdon and Burnaston in the 50s/60s I believe it ended its life on a dump in the Middle East.

In its time it belonged to Don Everall, and Executive Air Transport being at one time leased to Derby Airways

I remember aroung the middle 50's as a child living southwest of Croydon Airport on the Webb Estate next to the Cricket Club. NEG was one of the regular Transair Dakotas that used the airfield. I have a feeling that that particular aircraft had the Transair colour scheme of silver and white with royal blue cheat line but no red letttering. If my spotters memory can be relied upon, I know that Transair operated one Dakota as an executive transport for a group shipping company ( Niarchos ? ) and another was registered to Gerry Freeman not Transair, neither of which had the Transair Lettering.

I have a particular memeory of NEG side slipping to lose hight over the trees bordering the cricket club and aligning itself with the N/E runway which ran towards the airport buildings on the Purley Way. I though at the time that was a pretty skillful bit of flying, he seemed to me at the time below 200 feet, which today would not be considered good form over a built up area. Anther memory is of the Dakotas ,Ansons and probably Consuls thundering into the dawn sky at around 0400 with the newspapers, seemingly inches from my parents chimmney pots.

I flew the aircraft as an F/O with Gulf Aviation. In fact checking my logbook it was the first DC3 that I flew in 1969.

It was the only DC3 in Gulf that had U/C doors and disc brakes, the latter proved very popular at Das island where there was water at either end of the runway.

My last recorded flight in the DC3 with Gulf was in March 1971 which must have been about the end of the time that they were in service when the scheduled flights were operated by the BAC 1-11 400 and the F27's.

By that time the all the aircraft were completely knackered after flying around the Oman with fresh fruit and meat and only fit for firemen training.

G-ANEG

Just plagiarising from various other sources .....

c/n 33444 RAF serial KP226, delivered to the UK in June 1945 after the end of WW2. Sold to the civilian world in 1953, with G Freeman (see above) 1954-5, with Transair Croydon 1956, with Don Everall Wilverhampton 1957-60, when they merged with Air Safaris, with Jersey Airlines/BUA Channel Islands 1962-6, then to Gulf Aviation Bahrain until 1969 (still UK registered), then all sorts of paper re-registrations but last seen dumped at Bahrain still painted as G-ANEG in 1982.

I was still flying it on UK reg in 1971, local registration of Gulf aircraft in Bahrain didn't come about until at least 1973

Thank you very much for all that.

In the above Executive Air Transport, who operated out of Birmingham is missed out. They had the aircraft refurbished by Derby Airways at Burnaston in the early 60s and it was leased to them (Derby) for a short time. I was speaking to there ex MD the other day he also reminded me that he was the last pilot to ever land at Castle Bromwich airfield! Chipmunk engine failed enroute BHX-Cosford

My father "John" Atkinson flew this aircraft for Don Everall and Executive Air Transport. In the days when airline security was not the issue it is today,I would travel on the flight deck, sat on a Britvic crate and cushion placed inbetween the two pilots!.At the time I think there was talk of buying a Bristol Freighter to carry cars to France, and again I went with them to see several,at either Blackbushe or Manston, we flew in the aero clubs Miles Messenger. My mother flew as air hostess on many flights, and I have a wonderful photo of them both in Everall uniform.

My father spent the last twentyish years flying for Sir Alfred McAlpine with Dove G-AMDD, Beech Queenair G-ASIU, Beech 90 G-ABBX,nd Beech King Air 200 G-BMCA and retired at 69
