Hurricane Mk II: engine question
Did the Mk II have the Merlin? I know that both the H and the S were developed with the PV-12 before it was designated the Merlin, but am not sure when the name changed?
Many thanks.

According to Francis Mason in his book Hawker Aircraft since 1920 published by Putnam:-
Powerplant
Hurricane Mk I - 1,030 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin II or III. Watts 2-blade, D.H. or Rotol 3-blade propellers.
Hurricane Mk II 1,280 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin XX or 1,460 hp Merlin 22. 3-blade D.H or Rotol constant speed propeller.
In his description regarding the Hurricane's development he states " In August 1933 ,discussions were held between Sydney Camm and Major Buchanan of the Directorate of Technical Development ,Air Ministry, and proposals were put forward for the design of a monoplane fighter based on the Fury. The Rolls-Royce Goshawk engine (at that time favoured as a fighter powerplant), a fixed spatted undercarriage and four guns were included in the design, but early the following year this altered to take the new Roll-Royce P.V.12 engine that was to achieve fame as the Merlin."
The prototype Hurricane F.36/34 K5083 was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin 'C' driving a Watts 2-blade fixed-pitch wooden propeller first flew on 6 November 1935.

Here are some pictures of the experimental Hawkers single seat monoplane fighter.
The Hawker F36/34 with a semi secret Rolls Royce engine named the Merlin.
Another shot of the Hawker monoplane fighter showing enclosed cockpit and carefully cowled engine.
In this action shot it shows chief test pilot Flight-Lieut. P. W. S. Bulman putting the prototype through its paces.
Notice the tail plane struts and 2 bladed prop.
