Old Warden At Home 18 Feb

We intend to warm up the valves on the wireless transmitting device on Feb 18 if anyone would like to drop in and see us, or the museum which is far more interesting.
Subject to the airfield state. The FISOs are always in a state.
(Copied from VATCO's post in another forum)
We plan to open from 1000 until 1600 (reasonably civilised hours) and all are welcome
Please PPR at the collection (01767627927) or give us a call on the day.
If anyone thinks they will need to use the extension, please PM us and we will try to accomodate.
Hopefully we will have a little more luck with the weather and surface than in December last but as before, I will post shortly before the day to confirm all is OK.
There are some interesting new aircraft to view and maybe even one or two taking to the air. No promises

Do I understand that it's open to the general public please? If so, my wife and I will try to get along.

The Collection is open for viewing most of the year.
Restaurant too provides some welcome refreshments this time of the year
Have a look at the website for details
http://www.shuttleworth.org/
On Feb 18th we are hoping to have a few aircraft visit us and maybe one or two of the resident private owners fly their aircraft
It is not a display event

I often grizzle about the biase given to Shuttleworth, particulary by the regulators, which is unfair upon the many other members of the british aircraft preservation groups. But yesterday:

I needed some research material for a project that I am doing, and to cut a long story short, found myself within 25 miles of Old Warden (after travelling for 387 miles) at 1500hrs. They do not normally allow admission after 3 pm at this time of the year, but a quick phone call with my plea's was met with a you pay the £10, you get to see the aircraft.

I arrived at 1530 hrs, was allowed in for free, and given a guided tour that included beyond the barrier access to the aircraft in question. Service that goes beyond the call, and for which I am very gratefull. I cannot thank individuals in this forum because I did not get any names, but the 2 gentlemen and lady on reception know who they are. The collection will not forfeit the income for I will return, probably on a sunset flying day, in order to take in the collection in slow time, and will contribute to the restoration fund.

The short visit yesterday merely wet the appetite. I know that members frequent these pages, please pass on my thanks to those concerned. ....and for once, the biase to the collection is totally justified!!

An excellent report! Did you get to see the Gladiator and SE-5A being repainted? Just wonder what markings they are?

Sorry, I can't help you on that one as I suspect the machines you mention were in the workshop, and I did not have time to take in that one. I needed access to the Lysander, and was more than happy with the welcome that my son and I received.

The Spitfire was having work done, that I believe is to include a 'new' engine. The Lysanders cowlings were removed, as was the prop. The 'magnificent men and their flying machines' group all looked healthy.

I have only been twice before, and yet it felt as if I had never been. I cannot recall the restaurant being as substantial as it is. But best of all, the staff were outstanding, and whilst I busied myself with the Lysander, a volunteer escorted my son around the collection, no doubt finding himself gobsmacked at the level of knowledge a 12 year old can have.

Even the brick lorry that shed its load in front of me on the A1, and whose debris I had no choice but to drive over (with a large trailer) did not ruin my afternoon, and the 88 photographs I took all came out well.

If anybody knows of anything about the collections Lysander that is not authentic WWII, I would be very grateful to hear about it. I know the long tank is a dummy, but I am led to believe that it is authentic.

I am not surprised that you received such a nice welcome. They are wonderful people.

The reason that we, especially Danny, who made ONE exception to take The Shuttleworth Collection under PPRuNe's wing and support it is simple. It is our heritage.

The collection will be there for many many years to come so that when those, like you TM, take their children to Old Warden, and they in turn take THEIR children to see it too, it will have achieved all that it set out to acheive all those years ago.

What you felt was dedication. It comes from a deep sense of being part of something very very rare - as many of the aircraft are. Everyone involved gives of their time freely and eagerly and just cannot wait to prove it to people like you.

I personally have a real fondness for the Shuttleworth and when I proposed our support for The Shuttleworth Collection to Danny a few years back, he gave his instant approval. Since then I have had to fend off raised eyebrows and endless jibes that there are just as many organizations that are worthy. That may very well be true, but there is only one Shuttleworth Collection with no other like it anywhere in the world today.

Just to visit the Collection is a time to remember.

To see the Collection flying is a joy to behold.

Hi PPP and Tiger_mate,

Many thanks indeed for the kind words T_m and the continuous support PPP - all has been passed on to the COllection/Shop as requested.

PM me with contact details, T_m and I'll give you the extra detail you need on the Lysander.

Airfield inspected this morning and providing there is no more of the wet stuff should be OK for Sunday BUT with care
The northern end of the runway is Ok but beyond the old Farm Track was a little soft, as is the taxiway from the 03 threshold end

If anyone is in doubt give us a call on Sunday morning when we have made the morning inspection

The area around the fuel installation is unservicable so NO FUEL will be available.
All parking will be close to the tower on the display line

There are some 25 aircraft booked to arrive at the moment so please be aware as some may need to backtrack the runway to vacate.

There is every likelyhood that the Stielglitz and Bestmann will fly.

Fingers crossed and see you Sunday
