Holme upon spalding moor airfield

Any information about the history of this little talked about airfield would be much appreciated.

I know the USAF deployed there in the mid 50's but what for? and did they opearte aircraft from there?

What truth is there in the plans to build an airport there before it closed?

When did the runway finaly close?

Any info appreciated

Cheers
