Starter whines softly,
Counting prop blades passing by
Belch smoke and thunder.

Then we moved on to the Whirlwind 7, with that great big Alvis Leonides: I swear you could hear each piston start, after being deafened by the cartridge start a few feet from the open cockpit window How did we manage as spotty 19 year old Mids, but what fun we had trying

Malarky Jim must still be out there somewhere; I lived in awe when we burst a tyre, only for him to blithely hold a hover for what seemed like ages in the dispersal, as the black hand gang changed the wheel

Apols, John E - as an 18 y/o Middy I was quite sensibly not allowed near any moving parts, nor did anyone try to explain anything to me without lots of pictures, so I think I dreamed up the .303 bit....

Still smelt nice though

Chippy starter was definitely 12 bore cartridge but without lead shot; wonder if anyone ever put a birdscarer cartridge in by 'mistake'!

Smile round engines

Seen a Chipmunk start with a 303 using the pepsi pull ring, it was on jacks at the time. My memories of great balls of fire, are Connie 049,s of Euravia, followed by Britannia's Brits, both a scary sight at night.
Dc4's and 6's always sounded rough till they cleared their throats. Ambassador's, the same .
Ah memories

Thread creep! Thread creep!

The topic has been contaminated.

(Unless, of course, you can provide evidence of a Chippie with a round engine)

(Which, now that I think of it, might be an interesting idea, although with a lower thrust line it would require MLG extensions...)

Just a traditional party poop.

They never used to scare me even when they dropped to bits - but after making turbines perform for a few years the whole idea of allowing all that reciprocating nonsense to provide the means to get into the air seemed rash to me.

I rewired the plug and cable for the sectioned Sabre at Duxford once when no-one was looking. When the button was pressed it jammed and the thing just kept going. Fascinating to watch, but I had to leave before enquiries were made and the next time I returned it had been more thoroughly disabled.

Even (especially?) Lycomings worry me now. Though I would like to see a Napier run for real.

BS

Memories, the flame sometimes seemed to reach as far as the old car park in front of the tower at Luton. Also one of the baggage handlers who used to ride around the apron on top of a towed set of airstairs went behind one on start up - he did make it all the way to the car park !
