WW2 aircraft tail markings

Does anyone on this forum know what the letter designation meant on the tail of USN aircraft? Ex.- A, X etc.

This link might help some. I would think the markings would be for the carrier (airfield), squadron, section, and aircraft number within the section.

Color and design of markings played a role in designation of pilot's status (Section Lead, Squadron Commander).
