What Aircraft?
Sorry, it just had to be done...
WebPilot's links to the Abingdon 1968 Royal Review pics just begged the question - 'What types can you identify?'

I counted 36 that I could positively identify [too bone idle to list] but there are a few I can't.
That should keep you going as the nights draw in...

i'd say that it's actually a Tempest or Typhoon between the Meteor and the Beaufigter?
You are right about the Avro 504.
Two biplanes in front of the Herc might be the Hawker Hart and the Caudron G.III now at RAFM
Interesting pics!

I'm sure it's a 504... there are two sets of interplane struts, the Tutor only has one. For some reason I though that was what FJJP had written anyway!

You could be right treadigraph.
I cannot zoom in close enough to see how many interplane struts it has.
I was going on what I can see of the fin and rudder, which is like the rest of the photo, indistinct.

Gainsey, I think you're right - the one to the right of the Beaufighter could well be a Defiant. On close inspection, the hump behind the canopy could be a turrett...

I remember going to that show at the grand age of 16, but in those days didnt have a camera, shame. Recall that as one of the best shows I have ever been too.
And I still go around 3 airshows a year.

These are such evocative photgraphs. I sometimes wonder if we have reached and passed the zenith of civilisation!
You may all find this link rather interesting:
http://www.petergoodearl.co.uk/airdays/raf50/index.htm
And as you'll see, the Defiant _is_ the machine on the right of the Beau!
It's also worth looking further into this site:

Check out the shot of a Diamond 16 formation of Lightnings - absolutely awesome.

And isn't that a Fournier next to the Harvard?
As you were, clearly a chipmunk in other view! Few too many Australian beers I\'m afraid.
Great pictures though, don\'t think we will see the likes again.

Hastings Mk1A (aux fuel tanks and lowered tailplane) TG576 is planted next to the Bev. I was on the crew that positioned it. Now preserved and in good nick at Duxford.

Remember the occasion well. Was sitting next to PRM on the floor of XP302 as we circled the Abingdon static park on 10th June. Boiling hot day prior to the Review proper, the Whirlwind was struggling in the high mid-morning temps and after a few circuits it was time to land, open the nose cowls and attempt to cool down.
The two vintage a/c in front of the VC10 were the Vickers Gunbus, and the (Royal ?) Afghan Air Force Hawker Hind, whose representatives presented the a/c to the RAF Museum on the day. If memory serves me correctly they still had a few more Hinds back home!
An event never to be repeated, with a mixture of old and new - was it THAT long ago!
