Question about 8th air force crews

I have read quite a few books about the 8th air force. All of them, without fail mention that when they arrive the German properganda radio welcomes them, and tells them that their clocks were slow/fast. This has always bugs me:

1) Did this actually happen? If so, it seems to have happened all the time. Is it a myth which has become fact?

2)If every squadron got the same message, the radio message would be very long, would'nt it?

3) As everyone seems to have had this done about their squadron/ group, surely someone must have thought that the builder/ clock maker is the weak link?
